To change my gp as they are incompetent?

I cannot fault the appointment system, or the reception staff who are unfailingly polite and helpful. The doctors
however are another matter. Several months ago I saw one gp asking for a referral to an ivf clinic for private treatment. He insisted on doing bloods first. The problem was that he wanted to do day 21 bloods on day 21 of my cycle, which was actually the day before my period was due. I explained this, but he was adamant that day 21 was when it would be done. He also did day 3 bloods on day 21. Not surprisingly the results were unhelpful showing I wasn't ovulating (I do ovulate perfectly, just not on day 14) but at least we got a referral for ivf ! I had a frustrating conversation with him where he told me a woman always ovulates on day. 14 and it's the luteal phase length that's variable. Hmm, righto if you insist!
a couple of weeks ago following ivf I found out I am pregnant :0). The prof at the ivf clinic mentioned I have sub clinical hyperthyroidism from the bloods I had done there, and advised me to see my gp for monitoring if I got pg, and after a truly entertaining weekend of heart palpitations, the trots and a pulse of around 120 resting I trotted off to see my gp on Monday. Lovely lady doctor agreed that it sounded like my thyroid might be a little over active and sent me for more bloods and an ECG. Results back today, I saw another gp in the practice (emergency appt, pot luck) and he told me I don't have over active thyroid, it's under active and my racing pulse and symptoms are due to the pregnancy. I did question this but he was adamant. I came out of the appt in tears, rang the ivf clinic who confirmed I'm not mad, the gp is wrong and when they heard my blood results are doing a referral on Monday.

change them if you want to dont if you dont simples

scarletforya · 22/06/2012 19:28

Please change. He is so wrong on the lutal phase thing and the ovulation thing it's annoyed me! It also terrifies me to think of such a precious pregnancy in his hands. Without a doubt change and best of luck with the pregnancy.

Many congratulations on your pg and I sincerely hope that you have a less stressful time for the remainder of it.

GPs are the jacks of all trades and masters of none of the medical profession.

Solicit recommendations for alternative GPs from friends and neighbours - especially those who've been with their practices through antenatal care and beyond.

I've spoken to my dsis who says I should report it as misdiagnosing and medicating someone who is hypothyroid as hyper and vice versa could have very dangerous implications.

Agree change if you aren't happy, but you should have booked a follow up appointment with the doctor who requested the bloods not a random emergency doctor.

Also I wouldn't report the GP until you have seen the specialist. GPs deal with more thyroid problems than obstetricians so it may be the obstetrician who has got it wrong. there's no rush to complain so I would wait for further info and just change GPs if you don't trust them.

Do you know what your results were? TSH levels?

mercibucket · 22/06/2012 20:15

Maybe your bloods are yoyoing between hyper and hypo so the latest results suggested hypo and previous suggested hyper? Can happen

Roger if you want to PM me I can send you the address of another internet forum where there are some people who are very knowledgable about thyroid dysfunction, if you posted your results there they are really good at responding quickly. Let me know if that would help. GPs are not usually experts regarding thyroid issues!

mercibucket · 22/06/2012 20:59

Yes that doesn't sound remotely hypo. Why did they think hypo with those results? Weird

You can also write and complain. My sister did this recently. They then changed her records to cover themselves!!! Pretty bad imo

My thyroid is underactive, I know I need to up my dose when I have a bout of SVT.

But I have changed GPs in the past - not regretted it.

It may be worth making a complaint to the GP practice, if this GP has a training need then identifying that will allow them to address it, and make things safer for other patients.
