...to ask about ascot this year?

Hi,

Are any of you going to ascot this year? Or even better have you been? Are they really strict on the dress code in the grandstand enclosure?

They say they have attendants on the entrance with pashminas, ties, fascinates etc. So if you wore a strapless dress would they turn you away or would they give you a pashmina and let you in anyway?

My plan would be to go hatless and jacket-less, and get a new pashmina and fascinator at the gate! Grin

NoTeaForMe · 21/06/2012 23:48

Ha ha! But would it work?

NoTeaForMe · 22/06/2012 07:43

Bumping!

Sadly I think you have to pay a deposit for the pashminas etc.

NoTeaForMe · 22/06/2012 07:57

I wouldn't mind paying a deposit...though I have a jacket so technically I wouldn't need a pashmina.

My dress isn't strapless, but it's sheer across the top. Dress code states 'no strapless dresses or sheer straps' so I'm a little unsure as to whether it breaks the rules or not really!

Aah!

I went for the first time on Tuesday, just to see Frankel Grin

The Grandstand is not that strict, I saw plenty of women in short skirts and bare shoulders. The only thing they are insisting on in the Grandstand is something on your head, either hat or fascinator.

They will not turn you away, unless you lo like those dodgy strippers that turne up on Wednesday Shock

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 22/06/2012 08:18

Have fun, I've always wanted to go. My Fair Lady is one of my fave films and I LOVE the Ascot scene.

NoTeaForMe · 22/06/2012 08:43

Thanks cavemum, are you happy to take full responsibility if I go in that dress and get turned away? Wink My shoulders aren't bare and like I say I'll be wearing a jacket to get in, and probably all day looking at the weather! I just don't know whether to risk it or run around today getting accessories for another dress I have!

Scarlet I've been before but they changed the dress code this year. It's a really lovely day out.

RIsk it!

Your outfit sounds absolutely fine.

catgirl1976 · 22/06/2012 09:12

I thought fascinators were banned or is that just the Royal Enclosure?

I read they banned streaky fake tan last year which I thought was great Grin

WorraLiberty · 22/06/2012 09:14

You'd be better off with a full length rain mac....

CaveMum · 22/06/2012 09:15

Fascinators are banned in the Royal Enclosure, but are fine in Grandstand.

If you are wearing a jacket to get in you will be absolutely fine. I go racing a lot and have always abided by the rule of dress for racing as if you are going to a wedding.

NoTeaForMe · 22/06/2012 09:30

worra for a minute I thought you were implying I would look like a flasher...that's not what you're saying is it?!

cave I agree, just with the new dress code I was unsure. My outfut has no blue PVC in sight, so that's always a bonus!

Fascinators are fine in the grandstand enclosure, but mine is quite big anyway!

Still makes me nervous...could really do without running around today trying to find shoes, hat/fascinator, bag and jewellery fr the other dress I have though!

The grandstand enclosure doesn't have a dress code though they encourage "smart dress". They do say they will turn away people with bare chests or in fancy dress likely to cause offense.

SuchProspects · 22/06/2012 12:01

Sorry, please ignore last. Totally wrong.

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 22/06/2012 12:39

Right. Stick a photo up then (you can always blur your face out) and we'll give you the definitive answer. Going on your description I'm pretty sure it's fine!

NoTeaForMe · 22/06/2012 12:56

Ok so here is the dress. At the front above the green is sheer and pretty see through, at the back it's all above the belt. Then the blacker part at the bottom is see through, but again quite subtle.

I bought it very confidently thinking it would be fine, then re-read the 'no sheer straps' part of the dress code and now I'm not 100% sure. I have a black jacket and stroppy shoes and grey bag and fascinator.

OP posts:
catgirl1976 · 22/06/2012 12:59

I think it's lovely and that you will be fine

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 22/06/2012 13:06

Oh, that's fine. They mean 'No Slutty Dresses' I think, that is absolutely not slutty.

MustStartExercising · 22/06/2012 14:30

That looks fine to me.

But I love the idea of 'stroppy' shoes!

NoTeaForMe · 22/06/2012 18:30

Ha ha! Clearly I meant 'strappy' shoes! Silly auto-correct fails again!

Right well I'm taking your word for it...that's the outfit I'm wearing. If I don't get in you're all in trouble!

With at least 6,000 Australians going to watch Black Caviar tomorrow one suspects a prominent colour will be salmon pink and black.

Wonder if The Queen (who has never ever looked happier than when receiving the Queen's Vase trophy off Prince Phillip this afternoon) will go for salmon pink hat herself (very much doubt it!!).
