And not just because we haven't had a summer yet. I have been known to close curtains/ shutters on June 21st, just so that I don't know what time it gets dark at. So I can't say in two weeks time the nights are drawing in. Am I alone in my lunacy?

I always remember my Mum. She used to phone me up every year to say 'Ah well - that's winter on the way'. (And in December, the same thing in reverse.)

At the time, I groaned. Wish she was still around to do it now though.

OlaRapaceFru · 21/06/2012 17:22

I agree, pinkh. There are times I hate this time of year, especially when we have a grim Summer. If I want to go to bed at 9pm ish, I know I've still got to put up with it being light outside whilst I'm trying to go to sleep.

pinkhousesarebest · 21/06/2012 17:33

My family think it's hilarious, and yes Cosietoesie I blame my dad who will start the countdown from tomorrow.

Conversely on December 21st I am positively chipper.

yes, I do this

I am a summer, summer, summer person

I hate winter with a vengeance and the nadir of my year is Christmas and New Year

I fucking detest people who moan about warm weather

once Midsummer Day comes, I start getting a little bit more fed up every day and bemoaning the passage of our so-called summer

christ, I need a glass of wine now Smile

Nuckinfutter · 21/06/2012 19:05

It's pouring here on the most depressing day of the year, thankfully I'm having wine!

WorraLiberty · 21/06/2012 19:08

I was under the impression that midsummer's day is on Sunday? Confused

PinkWinePixie · 21/06/2012 19:09

I thought it was yesterday!

piratecat · 21/06/2012 19:10

i honestly feel like this WAS the longest day. dd off school (she's only 10) for 6 now days with terrible period pains (no bleeding-thats another thread)

You look outside and it's just miserable, the garden is colourful but soaked. I just want to get into bed tbh. I love the summer too, getting out, thinking ooh lets take a picnic somewhere. I want to be all smiley.

Sad
piratecat · 21/06/2012 19:11

my calendar said yesterday too, but they've all been out in the rain today at stonehenge on the news.

Threelittleducks · 21/06/2012 19:16

It's been the fullest, drizzliest day here too :(
I am so with you.

Nuckinfutter · 21/06/2012 19:25

wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/longest-day/

I've been cheated, it was yesterday!

dementedma · 21/06/2012 19:27

wkmmum · 21/06/2012 19:29

It was yesterday cos it's a leap year. Shortest day is still 21st December and we'll be back to normal next June xx

Nuckinfutter · 21/06/2012 19:32

Same here demented, even the dog has disappeared into her doggy bed depressed :(

AnnoyingOrange · 21/06/2012 19:32

Midsummer's Day is on Sunday 24th June.

Yesterday was the longest day or the summer solstice

WorraLiberty · 21/06/2012 19:35

Ahh thanks Annoying

So I'm only half mad Grin

AnnoyingOrange · 21/06/2012 19:37
Smile
Nuckinfutter · 21/06/2012 19:37

Forgot about the Leap Year thingy Wkm x

CalamityJones · 21/06/2012 19:38

Oh god yes. It feels like winter is on the way now without even having had a summer. It's miserable.

friendlymum67 · 21/06/2012 19:39

I feel like this too - I spend winter waiting for shortest day so I can start counting towards the lighter evenings and then ... it seems in the blink of an eye, its all downhill again!!! :(

AnnoyingOrange · 21/06/2012 19:41

Midsummer day is a traditional Quarter Day:

"The Quarter Days are the days that mark the beginning of each quarter of the year. In England, Wales and Ireland the quarter days are actually four religious festivals:

Lady Day - The Feast of the Annunciation, March 25
Midsummer Day - The Feast of St. John the Baptist, June 24
Michaelmas - The Feast of St. Michael and All Angels, September 29
Christmas Day - The Feast of the Nativity, December 25"

From www.landlordzone.co.uk/quarter_days.htm

I know this because I used to collect rents Smile

CalamityJones · 21/06/2012 19:42

I don't even dislike winter, I am just sick of no summers. I always said I'd never live anywhere other than England as I love the change in seasons. But they're all just grey and damp!

AnyFucker · 21/06/2012 19:52

Oh, I love the UK

I love a UK Summer's Day

I just wish with all my heart it occurred more than 3 days a year

piratecat · 21/06/2012 20:01

i love our seasons too, we are so lucky. The summer is too short.

So today wasn't solstice, i am glad, it means yesterday, which was the official longest day wasn't too bad.

Today just WAS the longest day in my experience. !

So let's get this right, Midsummer is on the 24th? goodo, lets hope the sun shines.
