To really hate the word 'quirky' being used bloody everywhere

It seems to be used to describe every brand/product that I read about (work in a creative field so see this stuff a LOT) and it drives me bonkers. It's the equivalent of people who say they're 'a little bit crazy' - no you're not, you're just like anyone else. Likewise 'quirky' decor/dress sense/whatever - it's not, it's like 90% of what else is out there. A less over-used description of your product would be much more 'quirky' than this cliched rubbish.

Yes, it is being used a lot and so is 'eclectic'. Bit like 'rustic' which just usually means knackered/a mess.

abitcoldupnorth · 21/06/2012 14:12

yy, a bugbear of mine since mid-90s when it first started appearing on book blurbs.

wrathomum · 21/06/2012 14:12

Oh no - YANBU. Totes not :o

izzyizin · 21/06/2012 14:13

I haven't used that particular word for years. Methinks 'tis time for a revival.

CrispyCod · 21/06/2012 14:17

Vintage....argghhhh, that word really annoys me.

NinaHeart · 21/06/2012 14:21

Vintage usually equals twee.

hiddenhome · 21/06/2012 14:28

The post office manager described me and dh as 'eccentric' Hmm

PooshTun · 21/06/2012 14:43

With me its 'zany' which is similar.

I've lived in the US for a while and some Americans like to refer to themselves as zany.

For a while I followed an American version of Blind Date and I so wanted to throw an object at the TV every time a contestant described themselves as 'zany' - I have a zany sense of humour. I can be so zany at times. My friends keep telling me how zany I am. etc etc.

trixie123 · 21/06/2012 14:46

also, when did "swingeing" as in "swingeing cuts" become a word? Even the quality press and BBC news use it. It's some sort of play on whinging I assume but drives me bonkers. IT'S NOT A WORD! As you were Grin

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 21/06/2012 14:46

Quirky is the new retro

GrendelsMum · 21/06/2012 14:49

I'm ever so quirky, me. Also zany, wacky and funky-retro.

Woodlands · 21/06/2012 14:51

Swingeing is a perfectly good word - according to Merriam-Webster its first recorded usage was in 1575.

yellowraincoat · 21/06/2012 14:52

Me and my partner refer to shows we like (such as Twin Peaks, John From Cincinatti) as "full of quirky characters".

Just for a laugh.

Actual use of the word "quirky" is annoying, although my partner has started referring to a lot of things as "a bit different". I think he's turning into someone's aunt.

StealthPolarBear · 21/06/2012 14:59

Can I bring in the seat ibitha, which is apparently "compact, stunnin' and lowded wiv spek"
Makes me cringe every time I hear it and I have been looking for a chance to rant.

StealthPolarBear · 21/06/2012 15:00

Swingeing is a word, isn't it? Afaik it means wide reaching

StealthPolarBear · 21/06/2012 15:01

Ps I think lowded wiv spek means it has electric windows

MrsHelsBels74 · 21/06/2012 15:23

Makes a change from whacky I guess.

Whatmeworry · 21/06/2012 15:35

Poor people are Nuts, middle class people are Quirky, and rich people are Delightfully Eccentric

Self professed Zany people and Whacky people have the souls of Accountants :o
