Because DH has got a steel and keeps sharpening ALL the knives and I have cut my fingers around 4 times since he got the stupid thing.

I can't sharpen knives as I can't stand the horrible noise it makes.
I'd rather buy new ones.

cuttingpicassostoenails · 20/06/2012 20:42

A blunt knife is a dangerous thing.

SlipperyNipple · 20/06/2012 20:45

You are wrong.

WowOoo · 20/06/2012 20:45

Blunt ones are far more dangerous.
With a sharp knife you take care.
I love sharpening my knives.
Neither Dh or I ever get cut and our knives are always sharp.
Don't touch the sharp bit anymore!

Lizcat · 20/06/2012 20:48

If you cut yourself with sharp knives I am afraid it is poor knife skills. Using correct knife skills you protect yourself from injury.

Sharp knives with give good clean easy to repair cuts whereas blunt knives will cause nasty ragged difficult to repair wounds.
Day job - surgery
Hobby - cooking

A sharp knife is much less dangerous. Because you need a lot more force to. It with a blunt knife, meaning you have much more chance of the knife slipping. Hold food to be chopped with your fingers in 'crab claws' (hooked, with the nails pointing down, so the knife lays flat against the finger and as you chop up and down they are out of the way. Always keep the point of the knife touching the board. Always use a wooden or plastic chopping board. NEVER GLASS.

I sharpen my knives all the time, you need less pressure using a sharp knife than a blunt one, so less likely to have an accident imo.

I hate the sound of knives sharpening too, but i grit my teeth and bear it :)

Poulay · 20/06/2012 21:03

Steels don't sharpen knives, they hone them.

I would be surprised if it is all that sharp TBH.

buttonmoon78 · 20/06/2012 21:25

Sharp = safer
Blunt = less safe

Tis strange but true.

TheSpokenNerd · 20/06/2012 21:31

I cut the fingers when I am washing the knives...or getting them out of the drainer. I am frightened to death of the things now! I nearly took the top off my index tonight as I reached into the sink and there it was!

DOnt submerge your knives with the rest of the washing. Dip it in holding handle, wash, take out, drain handle up, problem avoided!

2rebecca · 20/06/2012 22:05

YABU, I hate blunt knives. You just have to be careful with them and wash them one at a time not plonk them in a soapy bowl where you can't see them.

Jambonfrites · 20/06/2012 22:47

Well I think YADNBU. We have a poncey Japanese kitchen knife which DH sharpens from time to time. While it is amazing for cutting tomatoes etc (sthg most other knives are a bit crap at), I have accidentally cut myself on it several times and without realising you've even done it suddenly blood is everywhere. Eek. Nasty thing.

shoofly · 20/06/2012 22:55

He is BU if he puts said knives in the washing up bowl and leaves them for your unsuspecting fingers to find. Blunt knives are more likely to cut you. But sharp ones should be treated with respect!
