thoughtless TWATS ?

People who park while dropping their children off at school:

on zigzag lines
obstructing pavements
on road corners
(almost unbelievably) blocking emergency access points to the school

I know I'm not BU.

Sorry if this has been done to death, but even if it has, clearly some people still seem to think it is okay to carry on. At our school, this is regardless of letters from the head teacher, local police and upped police presence at the gates.

We are in a double dip recession you Muppets. These people's time cost us all money, and most importantly takes their attention away from vital services which have never been more stretched.

If you are one of these parents/carers, YOU are blocking the view of other drivers (especially those similarly inconsiderate speeding ones) so they have less time to see and stop their car from hitting YOUR CHILD, or YOUR CHILD's FRIENDS, or MY CHILD, as they try to cross the road and enter school safely you Morons.

And God help anyone live with themselves if they've parked across the school gates when an emergency vehicle needs to get through.

Anyone know how many RTAs/deaths have been caused in these ways?

Grin

I keep meaning to design and print some 'fake' tickets saying exactly this to put under their windscreen wipers but I'm too scared they will see it's me putting it there! Although I do say to people " Do you realise that is a very dangerous and inconsiderate place to park?"

They usually just shrug and say "oh it's just for a minute". So they don't even mind being told they're a twat. Super thick skins as well as idiotic.

HecateAdonaea · 20/06/2012 12:36

Yup. I agree. It's selfish and totally thoughtless, normally done by people who think nobody matters but them.

You aren't going to get one single person on here who admits to doing it though.

ripsishere · 20/06/2012 12:37

DDs school had a similar problem. Her head had them design a small leaflet that they photocopied, coloured and used on the cars parking illeagally.
Not sure if it was the leaflets or the police with tickets and a tow truck that improved the situation.
They would only have to take one car away to improve the situation. Could be worht asking if your local police force would be willing.

YANBU - I live near a small private private pre prep school. So parents drive there - doesn't really serve the local community as such. It is in a residential road and the parking just has to be seen to be believed.

The council have now proposed restricted waiting yellow lines (school drop off and pick up times) which may resolve the issue - but probably not as it will not get enforced by police or parking wardens.

I couldn't get into my driveway at lunchtime because of the lunch time pickup and when you ask people to move they look at you as if on different planet - is it not too much that your child can't walk 50 yards down the road ?

Unfortunately the school has been there since the 1920/30 and if it was a new planning permission it would not be allowed due to the traffic issues it would cause in a residential area - but the school is there and we can't get rid

And before anyone says that we shouldn't have brought a house near a school - we have lived here for over 20years -when we were both out at work at crack of dawn so missed all this parking /school drop off issues , but having been at home for 10 years the problem has got worse over just that period.

knowitallstrikesagain · 20/06/2012 13:09

YANBU

But lots people must think this is perfectly fine, as so many do it. I posted recently about clothes left in changing rooms instead of lockers and got a unanimous YANBU, but surely loads of people do it for so many to be pissed off by it?

Then I was informed that these types of people are not on MN Grin

Sleepydog · 20/06/2012 13:11

yeah no one would admit to parking crap outside a school though would they - they would be hung , drawn and quartered ! Grin

Let me at 'em first !

ripsishere · 20/06/2012 13:15

My DDs school has three within about 500m. Some parents can't find the energy to park where they are supposed to in the local leisure centre. Too far to walk apparently.
As I said, only one car would need to be lifted onto a tow truck and the problem would disappear.

MidWeekSlump · 20/06/2012 13:17

I hate this also. I wish there was a traffic warden hotline we could call.
I find really annoying the parents who slow down/ stop (just for a second) on the zigzags while their child gets out at the gates.

Just how fat and lazy do you have to be to not park at the end of the street and walk a couple of yards.

Sleepydog · 20/06/2012 13:19

Car towing - I would love to see that outside this school - so many bloody 4 x 4 parked on junction .

EdithWeston · 20/06/2012 13:19

Well, I doubt it's ignorance - they'll have al, passed their driving tests which covers the Highway Code, and they've had reminders from the school.

Encouraging the regular presence of a ticketing traffic warden would probably help. A request would carry more weight if it was made by the school. Any way you could suggest they make one? And of course again in September when new joiners might replicate the problem.

Sleepydog · 20/06/2012 13:23

Well unfortunately that is the problem - when they all change again in Sept and many of the children that attend the school near me because its a private pre prep are parents who have come over from abroad !

Sleepydog · 20/06/2012 13:26

It is ignorance - ignorance to the fact that the way you park - your car is a danger - right on a junction - don't have to know the highway code to see that's a problem - also ignorance that it may be a tad inconvient to block a car in or out of a driveway.

The parents are ignorant , lazy , thoughtless and selfish . Grin

sugarice · 20/06/2012 13:27

We have a number of self entitled Parents who continue to park in the car park despite numerous letters from the Head asking them not to do it for child safety and congestion reasons. Unfortunately a combination of her lack of bottle in tackling them and the shameless "I can do what I want" attitude of these arrogant people means it will never be dealt with.

Hey thanks for all the replies Smile

Needed to vent this to stop me ranting to drivers themselves!

Edith, your post made me laugh - that you question whether it is people being ignorant of these issues. Sadly I think some people are ignorant, although I believe you do have to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the highway code in driving tests, perhaps more so these days than in my era [old emoticon] I don't know. Back in my day of learning it was luck of the draw what you had to show knowledge of in a driving test. These people are still on the roads!

I think some people do not actually understand the implications of what they are doing, or just plain forget. They probably think it is just noncy jobsworth types that get offended by rule breakers, and just don't "get" the actual issues, or even think about how they would feel if they caused an RTA. Until someone or something raises their awareness levels.

If this thread helps just one lurker to reconsider their ways it will be worth it Grin

Perhaps we should compile a list of useful measures to help raise peoples awareness of their twattery and tackle the issues head on?

1. Water blasters

  1. Name and shame? - We could take pictures on our phones and upload shop to the local constabulary the most twattish ones
  2. Get the children to design (and implement?) parking tickets
  3. Lobby police/council/school to send wardens/tow truck

Is there anything you think parents can do practically to support/reduce police hefty involvement? Perhaps we should start an anonymous parent led ticket warden service in each other's areas so no-one knows it's us Grin

Guilty!

However, only because stoping and running on the corner, pavement or the entrance is safer than trying to reverse when there are DCs about.
School is in an awkward cul a sac (sp), sometimes parking up in
The "wrong place" is the safest way to sort out the mess.

Sleepydog · 20/06/2012 16:11

Why do you have to drive up to the school ? Could you not park further away and walk ?

Expect a flaming .

manicbmc · 20/06/2012 16:20

Don't go down the cul-de-sac. Park somewhere else and walk the rest.

Sleepydog · 20/06/2012 16:23

It's the mentality - 'School is THERE - I MUST park THERE'
