To wash my underwired bras in my washing machine, do you??

Mspontipine · 19/06/2012 22:38

Hi there - all of my bras are underwired. I have a sparkly new washing machine. The instructions dictate that I am NOT to wash said bras in said machine. Now I have been warned this before but have washed said bras in other machines (only 2 machines ever, one, second hand, had for 10 years and the second, had from new for nearly 13 years - just so you know I don't have the bodies of hundreds of wrecked machines strewn behind me!!) and have never had a problem but now I've just got new one and spent a small fortune(to me) on it I am reluctant to do it and have now built up a rather large pile of worn bras and have been wearing this last one for ages a wee while and I had my hair (on my head) cut in it so it's a bit furry and am dithering...

What would you do??

Depends in the bra.

M&S ones, no problem.

Mimi Holiday / Agent Provocateur / Myla? Not a bloody chance! They're probably worth more than the machine!

ifancyashandy · 19/06/2012 23:11

Depends on the bra. Bloody autocorrect.

whathaveiforgottentoday · 19/06/2012 23:15

Mine go in the washing machine but not in the tumble drier.
I did buy one of those special bags to put them into the washing machine but my bras didn't fit so that was waste of money. I'm not sure why I don't put them in the tumble drier - probably to make me feel better for sticking them in the washing machine. No logic there at all.

FirCough · 19/06/2012 23:22

I looked for those bags in John Lewis and they were laughably small.

Found a set of 3 bags, all large enough for my purposes :) for the princely sum of 99p the lot - Dunelm Mill.

ImperialBlether · 19/06/2012 23:22

I did until the wire came out and the whole thing needed replacing. £350 later and no, I'm washing them by hand.

kelly2525 · 19/06/2012 23:23

Use a pillowcase, I've had to call someone out twice to retrieve my f cup wires, it was a bit embarrassing the second time.

MrsApplepants · 19/06/2012 23:23

Yes and they're fine. Life is too short for handwashing!!

gobbledegook1 · 19/06/2012 23:23

I do either on a 30 degree hand wash function or a 30 degree 15minute quick wash and its never caused a problem.

ZillionChocolate · 19/06/2012 23:23

I have always machine washed bras. Have been stabbed in the side by escaped wires a few times and have once blocked the washing machine. Unblocked it with the help of my dad and the internet so didn't cost anything.

LondonKitty · 19/06/2012 23:32

Washing machines have instruction books??!

How come, with all the various special programmes and features they have on them now, there's not a bra cycle?

Shutupanddrive · 20/06/2012 08:06

Yes I always wash all my bras in the machine. Most are underwired. I don't put them in tumble dryer though. I couldn't be bothered hand washing them and they wouldn't feel as clean then either

valiumredhead · 20/06/2012 08:42

No because an escaped wire can damage a washing machine beyond the point of repair.

Elfontheedge · 20/06/2012 08:48

Nooooooo!
Bras should be hand washed after every other wear. I take mine in the shower with me and give them a good rinse there. Otherwise you can damage the machine and your bras.

notcitrus · 20/06/2012 08:48

I've always machine washed bras and Ive only once had an underwire stick out of a bra - never had one come out. Maybe it's because I don't buy cheap bras (they never come in D cup and above)?

orangeandlemons · 20/06/2012 08:59

We have a bra wire which has been lodging in our machine for about ...ooh ...18months. Sometimes we can pick up Sky TV on it

It rattled a bit at first, but seems to have disappeared into the nether reasons of the washer now. No harm done to anything at all. In fact I forgot it was there until I read this! Not that I advise it though.

However, I have better things to do than hand wash a bra (unless really expensive, but I don't own any like that). So I keep intending to wash them in a pillowcase but always foget. I am never sure handwashing cleans things properly, and I bet they put it on non-wired bras too. I can accept it on an underwired bra buton very little else

I worked in the clothing industry for 10 years. Anything that says handwash usually (but not always-there are exceptions, ) means that the retailer won't pay enough to have them wash tested properly, so get out of any legal redress by putting absolute minimum wash care advice

notheroldie · 20/06/2012 09:02

Always machine wash.
In my 30 yrs of under wired-bra wearing I haven't handwashed. But last year when the wire wore through the underside of my new Bravissimo bra I rang them and they said you should HAND WASH only. I said I've never handwashed and this has never happened etc, they said they won't replace as it wasnt a faulty bra but out of good will they did replace it.
I do find wires poking out at the side or up the front sometimes, just sew them back in, but I've gone from a E to J in recent years so they are under a particularly lot of strain Grin
I've never knowingly knackered a washing machine however

MousyMouse · 20/06/2012 09:06

yes I do, but the wire ones only in a pillow cover with zip to avoid that embarassing moment when the repairmen shows the wire to you that has blocked the drum

Halfling · 20/06/2012 09:13

I do it all the time. I wash my underwired bras in a padded wash bag that protect the bra as well as washing machine. I got it from amazon and here is the link -

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 20/06/2012 09:19

Machine washing shortens the life of the bra. Mine aren't hugely expensive, but I reckon every week I wash about £150-worth.

Don't handwash any more though - as someone else said, I'm never convinced handwashed things are properly clean.

I've got a zipped bag which also protects from colours running, so you could put a red bra in with a white wash and vice versa. Can't remember where I bought it.

getupgo · 20/06/2012 09:21

use the delicates setting? the spin wont be as vicious on that setting

also put in a pillowcase or hosiery bag

SardineQueen · 20/06/2012 09:32

Yes machine
Yes bag thing (although only for the last 3 years or so)
Never damaged machine or bra

Itsgottabebags · 20/06/2012 09:47

I always hadwash. My bras are expensive. I have in the past and the wires came out.

whathaveiforgottentoday · 20/06/2012 22:59

Putting them in a pillow case - what a simple solution. Why didn't I think of that before. Thank you

bogeyface · 20/06/2012 23:01

Before I had a smirking washing machine engineer pull a wire out of my machine, I would have said no.

Now I would say no, but tie them into a pillowcase first! The worst bit was, I had been wearing the bra but hadnt noticed that one of my tits was bouncing off my knee :o

bogeyface · 20/06/2012 23:02

Oh and I was HH cup then too, how the effing jeff did I not notice?!
