AIBU to be annoyed at this lad who came to the door?

A small annoyance, but still.

Am rushing around trying to get ready to take DS to the doctor, have been up three times in night, house is a tip, oh, and smell that a nappy need to be changed. Doorbell rings and there is a young man there, door to door selling, with ID card.

I blurt out, 'I'm sorry, I don't buy things at the door, I can't....' trail off ineffectually. (We have one of those snotty stickers by the door saying that I don't buy things at the door.)

He snaps: 'Fine, I don't suppose you believe in second chances', and stomps off. I come out of the door and spout something along the lines of 'Hang on, I've been up all night, I have a sick baby, I don't have time for this.' But he still scowls at me and stomps away.

AIBU to be a bit annoyed at his attitude especially on my doorstep?

YANBU, he was rude and I have never heard of these door to door sellers claiming to be on a rehabilitation programme or something!

Lovetats · 19/06/2012 15:53

Oh bugger! I buy crap stuff off these lads. Maybe they won't burgle me because I'm nice to them?? < deluded >

FioFio · 19/06/2012 15:55

I didn't know it was a con either Shock

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 19/06/2012 15:58

They were doing this 30 yers ago!
Didn't know they were still at it

NigellaTufnel · 19/06/2012 16:15

I was also annoyed because both DH and I have thought long and hard about which charities we give to.
It is a very personal and emotional choice and I hate it when people guilt me about not giving them cash.

I had one last year who knocked while I was bathing the kids before bed. I ignored the door because I wasn't expecting anyone and didn't want to drag the kids out of the bath. ( anyone who knows me would come round to the back door anyway)

But he kept ringing and ringing and ringing and then came into my porch and stated hammering on the inner front door.

Assuming my house must be on fire or something I ran downstairs with two naked children in tow.

Not best pleased when I realised it was one of these ex offender salespeople and when I told him I wasn't interested he started swearing at me in front of my kids.

Had to threaten to call the police to get him out of my porch.

HaveALittleFaith · 19/06/2012 16:29

Oh Blimey I've had them round too. Yes very pushy - I honestly never have any cash - struggle to have enough to pay the window cleaver! - and I got told he'd accept a cheque. I had to be pretty firm saying no. Glad I did now. But he made a pretty penny, mostly older people round here (we're in a bungalow).

That was nice of the JW's! Don't agree with the beliefs but a kind thing to do.

Oh my god those people sound quite frightening. I have a sticker on my door saying dont buy from doorstep. I usually jus open the door and say can you not read, point to the sign and close the door.

I think it should be illegal to sell anything on the doorstep. That way if people do come round ul know its a scam.

i once had a right go at the Jehovah witness who came knocking at 9pm. He asked how i was and he was told the truth -'I was fine until u rang my door bell and woke up my small child. Thanks very much for that.' and then he got the door slammed in his face.

ComposHat · 19/06/2012 16:39

It is a con, old as the hills.

The other variant on this scam is 'spazzing' which involves faking the symptoms of cerebral palsy and going door to door flogging tat.

Call the police and shut the door on them.

BadgersRetreat · 19/06/2012 16:39

we get loads of people at the door - mostly charity beggars - had one last night in fact...for the children in Africa or something

i usually send DH because he's not a wimp like me a big bugger and he's nice but firm with them when he tells them to go away

only ones i don't mind are the local kids who come round on a Saturday morning looking for bottles to take to the recycling depot - they use the money for their school sports teams and are usually in their kit, about 25 of them do a street at a time followed by a dad in a truck collecting all the bottles

they always get a wine bottle or three as i know it's a good cause.

We had one once who was perfectly nice when I said no thanks - but five minutes later I found him with his hands cupped around his face, pressed up against our front window. Gave me a huge fright.

He scarpered - after getting an eyeful of the messiest front room in the UK, full of laundry, children's toys, overturned chairs and cold cups of tea. He probably assumed we'd already been broken into.

MammaTJ · 19/06/2012 18:16

Oh AdmiralBenson, you made me laugh. I have to dispute your claim though mine is the ''messiest front room in the UK''.

I engaged with a similar guy and found myself buying a duster for £12 out of pity so try and get rid as soon as possible. Cant stand door to door sales or phone calls if I want something I will go and buy it thanks.
