to love going to the dump

So today I tackled the dreaded cupboard under the stairs and have packed the car with shit to be flung. The dump is a five minute drive away so going before school pick up. I am so looking forward to flinging the bags, broken toys and general crap in the big skips.

The noise, the peeking at what other people have thrown, the feeling of being lighter

I love it!

I used to love going with my Dad as a child for some reason.

I was fascinated by the seagulls Grin

BonnieBumble · 19/06/2012 12:13

YABU! Grin

Where we used to live there were traffic jams as families enjoyed days out at the dump. Don't get the appeal, although I am a convert to the car boot sale.

MrsMangoBiscuit · 19/06/2012 12:15

Used to love it as a child. We hired a skip to clear out the garage (yes it was that bad!) and it just wasn't the same. :(
Still love going to the bottle bank though, there's something very theraputic about smashing glass! Grin

DH used to hate me going to dump where we used to live. I'd tote our broken crap down there and return with other peoples slightly less broken crap that I'd bought for a bargain price.

Now look in containers at dump with longing but don't think I could dive in and rescue stuff for 'upcycling' without being arrested/ breaking leg.

OldGreyWiffleTest · 19/06/2012 12:27

I'm the same as you OTTers. I also have a good gander as I'm driving past people's houses on bin day. Just can't resist.

LeB0F · 19/06/2012 12:28

Don't you mean the "recycling centre"? They get most stroppy if you call it a dump these days...

But god yes, you can't beat chucking a load of crap out- I've spent all weekend bagging up charity shop stuff and bags for the tip. Very cathartic!

takingiteasy · 19/06/2012 12:30

I'm laughing at family days out! If we're going at the weekend ds gets excited! I love the cardboard recycling machine I stand and wait until it squashes my thing. Best part of Christmas!

Ours doesn't sell stuff but the men will pull something decent out and leave it for someone else to pick up. They also have the biggest collection of soft toys and gnomes decorating their office and the road round!

Ds's massive dog toy was there for a while. I felt famous!

Yep, one better than looking in someone's window.

Recycling boxes, window to the soul of a family.

(mine seems to be an alcoholic window this week judging by number of chink sounds coming from recycling lorry - it's old jam jars and coffee jars and San Miguel Fresca bottles, mmm)

0TTers · 19/06/2012 12:37

Strikeout fail!

AKE2012 · 19/06/2012 12:42

i love having a clear out. I am trying to teach my child the joys of this and that she doesnt need to keep every scrap of paper or broken toy.

I dont like going to the dump or 'recycling centre' coz of the amount of good stuff being thrown out.
I got a brand new 32inch TV from there. Only thing wrong with it was that it needed a new power cable. A lot of people around here would rather throw it out than give it to someone else to get the use out of it.
Someone i know knew their neighbour was wanting to ger rid of their trampoline (as kids had out grown it) so mentioned it to the neighbour but instead of passing it on they threw it out.

girlywhirly · 19/06/2012 15:52

I love the sign on the crushing machine that says "NO CHILDREN" at our tip, sorry recycling centre.

I bet some people would be tempted at times.

nymets · 19/06/2012 15:53

at ours we have to file every item to dump into the relevant skip, can take yonks Grin

Lovetats · 19/06/2012 15:55

I hate going because our not-so-local one is manned by goblins that look at me funny Shock

LentillyFart · 19/06/2012 15:59

I keep reading this thread title as

"to love going for a dump"

In which case OP, YANBU. You can't beat it!

Grin
gothicangel · 19/06/2012 16:49

i love it too,

we have been having a clear out and taking loads down there, they all know us there know :) kinda sad but nice when they say hello or help me with putting things in the right places,

:)

MrsMangoBiscuit · 19/06/2012 17:31

Sorry gothicangel, but after LentillyFart's post, yours made me laugh till my eyes watered!! Grin

takingiteasy · 19/06/2012 18:21

I've dumped! Was going to go before picking up ds but thought he'd want to join in the fun. On the way home he told me I'm the best mum in the world. Easily pleased!

It was hard trying to sneak his toys past him though!

I picked up a gorgeous, huge 1950's mirror from ours, they're a bit funny about you taking stuff out now, though.

McKayz · 19/06/2012 18:54

I love going with a big box of glass bottles. It's sooo much fun smashing them.

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 19/06/2012 18:56

I like it, but I also feel a bit sad when I see stuff that could be recycled or re-used.

Anything that's not good enough for a charity shop or ebay gets put outside my house, and it almost always gets taken by passers by.

Dropdeadfred · 19/06/2012 19:01

I llove it too but honestly I'm
Amazed at the stuff that gets chucked. Last week two lively little solid pine bedside drawers were thrown in the waste timber bin. I was sighing ' sand down and farrow and ball' all the way home

wigglybeezer · 19/06/2012 19:04

I like having less clutter in the house but I feel awful throwing anything that has been part of family life out, even if it's worn out. I have to force myself and often want to get stuff back out. The worst are the boys clothes, hate putting them through the wee trap door. I can understand hoarders even if I am too sensible to be one.

I leave the tip feeling depressed that everything wears out in the end!
