From what I recall it used to be really common. I got mine of eBay made to measure for 120 and its in a bag at the back of a wardrobe. Just where it would be if it cost 1200!

I'd have hired.

14 years ago in August, I wore a dress that was the best of both worlds. I took a picture of a dress to a lady who ran a hiring service from her back bedroom, and looked through all of the (approx 50 dresses) she had. None of them were particularly similar to my picture but because it was quite a plain, simple dress, high neck at the front, low v at the back, no beading, etc on it at all, just the drape and sheen of the fabric so the TERRIFIC lady offered to make one as similar as she could because she knew she'd be able to add to it really easily.

Cost me £200 for a dress that was £1400 in the magazine AND I didn't have to do anything except return it before going on honeymoon. No dry cleaning, no storage, loads of photos. Sorted. Would do same again tomorrow.

I hired mine (12 years ago), worked well for me.
It cost me a quarter of what it would have cost to buy it and I just took it back to the shop a few days after the wedding covered in winestains and mud around the hem no cleaning bills, no storage headaches, job done.

I'm a bit of a declutter fiend though so it never would have hung around for very long in any case.

minceorotherwise · 18/06/2012 21:57

I'd stick a picture of what you like, what size you are etc on here. See if anyone can lend you one. Worth a shot

emsyj · 18/06/2012 22:01

It's a lot harder to find hire companies than it used to be - you might struggle to find anything to hire, and if you do find something it won't be cheap (plus it will be stressful trying not to ruin it!)

I would buy a second hand one or a sample - they're cheap as chips (because most people are really precious about having a 'new' dress all of their very own) and you can bin it afterwards.

CookieMonster · 18/06/2012 22:01

Yes, yes and yes again. I hired mine (a long time ago) and have had no regrets. Saved money, no storage to think about, no brainer IMOH ... why would you want to keep it??

Abra1d · 18/06/2012 22:02

I borrowec mine.

StrawbRhi · 19/06/2012 00:26

Im getting married this Sunday and would have happily hired a dress if I could find one. Unfortunately there doesnt seem to be much available for hire when you're a plus size. Ended up paying £1000 for my dress, its gorgeous but I do wish it was about 75% less!

anniemcphee · 19/06/2012 00:52

Have you thought of buying from a charity shop and then redonating it back to them?
Oxfambridal
Oxfam have a bridal shop.
I googled hire shops and the ones I looked at were from £195.
(I bought my dress from Ebay for £99, from a bridal shop that was closing down and the dress was stunning - should have been £700!!)

anniemcphee · 19/06/2012 01:09

Just read on there that 95% of their stock is new - or catwalk dresses - donated by the designers at the end of season. Well worth a look!

HairyPotter · 19/06/2012 01:21

I hired my dress 21 years ago I didn't see the point spending hundreds of pounds for something to lie around in the loft for ever more.

That said, it was more common back in the olden days of 1991.
Not sure how easy it would be to do now, but definitely worth a look.

emblosion · 19/06/2012 05:14

I would have, but couldn't find any suppliers (we got married a couple of months ago). I didn't search high and low but I did look into it without success!

dazzlingdeborahrose · 19/06/2012 07:38

I hired my dress 16 years ago. a £1200 dress for £200 :) I then spent the rest of the money on fab new clothes for my honeymoon that I would wear again. As someone said though, I'm not sure how easy it is to hire now. Some of the high street stores (monsoon etc) have a bridal range which have some lovely stuff and are very reasonable also.

SquashedSquirrel · 19/06/2012 07:45

I hired my dress 14 yrs ago. It was made for me, cost me £125 (as against £1000+) and was lovely. I simply didn't see the point of paying an enormous amount for money for something I would never use again and didn't really have the space to store.

I wasn't sure if many other people did it and certainly my friends who got married around the same time as me thought I was mad!

Anyway, it seems a shame if it's not that easy to hire now. Good luck with finding something.

Teapot13 · 19/06/2012 07:53

YANBU but you may not find what you want as not as many people do it now. I knew someone (not in the UK) who wanted to but all the dresses she tried on looked worn/yellowed.

Definitely try e-bay, Oxfam, etc. When I was looking there were lots of dresses advertised online by people saying they needed the money to buy nursery furniture.

accountantsrule · 19/06/2012 09:56

I hired mine for my first wedding as that was generally the done thing then (10 years ago), this time round I bought it as it seems most places don't really hire them out anymore.

Scholes34 · 19/06/2012 10:02

You can hire mine! It's been beautifully dry cleaned and has been stored in a box in the loft for the last 18 years.

biddysmama · 19/06/2012 10:13

i paid £10 for mine from a charity shop, im making dresses for my girls atm and trying to decide whether to use it to make them something pretty

cornysilk · 19/06/2012 11:41

i hired mine 16 years ago ...was not unusual then as it was before people started spending silly money on weddings

Cockwomble · 19/06/2012 11:53

Mine came from a specialist bridal charity shop, like the oxfam example above - £125.

Cockwomble · 19/06/2012 11:53

I own it btw!

Cockwomble · 19/06/2012 11:53

And that was last year.

Bigwheel · 19/06/2012 12:47

Its quiet hard to find somewhere that hires them now, and if you do they are expensive. I brought an ex sample one from a Bridial shop, was £850, I paid £300 and can hopefully sell it again. Oxfam has a few bridal shops, there are also some lovely ones in the high street, bhs, monsoon etc. or try eBay / per loved if you have seen one you like. Nothing wrong with hiring one though if you can get one you like.

KPT083 · 19/06/2012 14:51

Look on eBay there's a hire service.
The sellers name tag is princess-celebritycelebrations.

Good luck for your wedding x

NinaHeart · 19/06/2012 15:07

I bought mine (last year) from Monsoon outlet. It was £60 and I pimped it up a bit. And it's proper silk not yer polyester rubbish!
