to report the neighbours?

My neighbour in my block are subletting her housing association flat.

At first I didn't want to do anything as it didn't seem like a nice thing to do, but now the population in the flat seems to be ever more transient, and it does worry me re the security of the building.

It is also preventing someone else who may genuinely need affordable housing from accessing it, not to mention that she is probably profiting unfairly from the situation.

Reporting would be pretty straightforward.

WIBU to do it?

My local authority let's you sublet council properties if you're a tenant, not just a room but the whole property.

You need to name and shame that local authority DMS. It's insane that any provider of social housing would allow tenants to sublet the whole property. If they don't need/want to live there any more, they should give up the tenancy; they shouldn't make money out of it.

Definitely report her! I would kill for social housing. People like her take the piss. Not only are they depriving a needy family of a home but they are making an income fraudulently (I am pretty sure subletting of social housing is either a crime or shortly going to be a criminal offence).

They aren't allowed to make money from it though, the rent has to be the same as the council charge so they'd only make enough to cover the rent IYSWIM

Why sublet if you're not going to make money from it? Why not just let the council rent it out to someone else instead do you?

DailyMailSpy · 18/06/2012 15:36

No we don't it would take us too long to get this place suitable for someone else to stay here but I think it's if someones maybe working away out the area/country or something they can move out and once they've came back they've still got their council place, I can't think of any other reason why someone would do it. Theyve only just stopped the right to buy, but it's for all new tenancies that started as of last year so any tenancy before that can still buy.
