To wash my toddler in the kitchen sink?

Have done since he was a baby and now he sits cross legged in it and seems happy. He gets washed after each meal, (he eats in his nappy as he is very messy still at 18 mo), after we go out and he gets dirty or sandy, and after swimming and before bed, so he is very clean.

It seems a pointless waste of water to give him the traditional bath each night (we live overseas by the sea and water here is desalinated seawater so expensive and energy inefficient). He gets to play with bath toys and there is a shower attachment so can rinse him and wash his hair etc. He seems quite happy.

AIBU? Dont think so but various acquaintances and family members seem a bit shocked. So thought would ask the MN jury.

nothing wrong with washing toddlers in the sink

I'm sure we've all done it at some point

hairyqueenofscots · 17/06/2012 20:58

i do it all the time :)))

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/06/2012 20:59

I would if DD didn't attack the taps when she was in there. After every meal, though, that must be a clean baby.

foodtech · 17/06/2012 21:00

I remember being washed in the sink when I was little. Awesome fun.

As long as your both happy then don't see an issue personally. I wouldn't wash DS in the sink regularly although I sit it by it to do his hands etc.

Craftymoo · 17/06/2012 21:02

I often did that when we were on holiday with DS as a toddler. There was no bath and he hated showers. If he is clean and you are all happy, I don't see a problem... although it might be of he is still trying to climb in at 15 :)

Napdamnyou · 17/06/2012 21:02

Mrs TP, it's more that after every meal he is a very dirty baby.
Butter in hair.
Broccoli and mince in ears.
Grated cheese in nappy.
Ketchup everywhere.

And so on...

:)

DD tries to comb her hair with her lasagna covered fork. That is always fun to get out. I only serve lasagna just before baths.

I remember being washed in the sink when I was little. Awesome fun.
Me too, I used to love it, I could see out the kitchen window.

squeakytoy · 17/06/2012 21:04

can you not just give him a wipe down after a meal and a bath once a day??

CuttedUpPear · 17/06/2012 21:04

Of course YANBU.
Is there any other place to do it?

Sirzy · 17/06/2012 21:05

Thats what I was thinking squeaky. Babywipes come in very handy with DS!

Napdamnyou · 17/06/2012 21:06

He hates being wiped down. He likes the sink.
He only has a bath if it is raining so hard we can't go swimming. Then I get in with him and we play water dinosaurs.
On a daily basis, it's sink all the time, every time.

Another child of the sink washed generation here.
I just never thought to do it with mine though prob as our bathroom was upstairs and easier to hoof them into bed.

MammaTJ · 17/06/2012 21:07

Nothing wrong with it at all!

Mrsjay · 17/06/2012 21:08

how many of us have baby photies of us being washed in the kitchen sink ? hopefully not just me Grin Just do it

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 17/06/2012 21:10

I am a child of the 80's and I don't know of anyone that didn't have a picture taken in the sink-bath, Fairy liquid and the dirty pots in the background! Grin

In fact, it's much easier than even the baby bath as they're at a better height, so I'm going to start doing it myself!

LottoQueen · 17/06/2012 21:11

Nothing wrong with it at all. :)

Every single child that was young enough (starting with me, I was late baby and then all grandchildren after) was bathed in our kitchen sink.

Tradition!!

ZZZenAgain · 17/06/2012 21:13

so long as it is clean, you can wash him in a sink, why not?

LottoQueen · 17/06/2012 21:14

My older siblings were probably bathed in kitchen sink too, but I obviously don't remember that as not there (brother was 12 when I was born)

Nagoo · 17/06/2012 21:17

Then I get in with him and we play water dinosaurs.

I am a terrible mother. I have never played water dinosaurs :(

VickityBoo · 17/06/2012 21:27

No harm in sink baby and toddler washing! Mum used to do it as there weren't flash baby baths then. Sure it was commonly done.

We did it on a caravan holiday.

You wash him an awful lot though.

Mintyy · 17/06/2012 21:31

Its not something I would ever do.

We have a bathroom sink, a bath and a shower, so I can see no need whatsoever to put a baby in sink where greasy old roasting tins are washed.

Ds3 15 months goes straight in the sink after really messy food, it's easier than going upstairs to the bath with him dripping food everywhere
