Went to a girls pampering party today at a beauty salon. Sat and watched the clients come and go. Now, I'm in favour of making the best of yourself as much as the next person but I just can't see the point or the appeal of the over made up/ plucked to baldness/sprayed tanned to oblivion look. Girls coming in sporting tattoos galore, having all sorts done to lose any visible hair on their bodies, getting hair extensions, up dos, spray tans, metallic nails, tooth gems. Caked in false tan and heavy eyeliner, bleached hair, spider eyelashes. I'm afraid it just looks crap and cheap to me but I may just be being unreasonable?

YANBU
Totally vulgar, in my opinion.

FuckerSnailInYourHedgerow · 16/06/2012 21:06

YANBU. I don't get it, - women who would otherwise be pretty spending lots of time and money making themselves look strange.

muttimalzwei · 16/06/2012 21:08

They don't look right. One of the beauticians was so caked up I really couldn't tell what she really looked like if that makes sense...

Not a look I like but if other people like it, it's up to them really

Looks crap and cheap to me too but I expect people who like that look don't get my look either.

Takes all sorts and all that

WorraLiberty · 16/06/2012 21:11

YANBU at all.

Then again, you wouldn't catch me anywhere near a 'pampering party' either

I'd rather visit the Dentist and have my teeth pulled out one by one...

muttimalzwei · 16/06/2012 21:13

I agree catgirl takes all sorts but it does spoil They probably looked at me and thought 'hair straighteners, eyebrow thread, eyelash tint and perm and spray tan needed'

yellowraincoat · 16/06/2012 21:13

Hmm.

People are free to look how they want to look but it's not a look that does it for me. They all end up looking the same with their caked on make-up and I just wonder how they can be arsed.

MirandaGoshawk · 16/06/2012 21:14

I blame Katie Price. I don't get why perfectly acceptable looking girls (such as some of the TOWIE crew) have to look as if they're about to go on the stage. It's as if they're wearing some sort of mask. Hopefully it's a phase and the nartural look will come back sometime Hmm but I'm not holding my breath

muttimalzwei · 16/06/2012 21:14

I didn't want to go to the pampering party but it was my daughter's best mate's. Pretty harmless, nails painted to Lady Ga ga

YANBU to not 'get it'.

YABU to tell other women how they should look and what makes them 'pretty'.

It's nice to try different looks, if that is what you are into.

I personally love the saying, 'it costs a fortune to look this cheap'.

catgirl1976 · 16/06/2012 21:15

I have had a few spray tans. They all looked bloody awful

I caught a bit of TOWIE for the first time the other night and I did want to give them all a good scrub so I can see where you are coming from

muttimalzwei · 16/06/2012 21:16

I suppose I just equate pretty with natural. Caked on make up in my opinion spoils a naturally pretty face, which I just think is a shame.

On women... me no likey.

On men... different bucket o' fish ;)

I do like me a chap with a spot of guyliner and manscara... not so much with the fake tan though!

usualsuspect · 16/06/2012 21:24

It's their choice though, maybe they don't like the way you look

squeakytoy · 16/06/2012 21:26

I am sure the drag queen / panto dame look will fade out eventually...

ThePathanKhansWitch · 16/06/2012 21:27

It's just decoration I suppose, like Tats or pierced faces. DD calls them "The lovely Ladies" Smile.

wasabipeanut · 16/06/2012 21:29

I think Y might be being U actually. I wouldn't want the heavily tanned and made up look myself but I have a sort of respect for those that do. In a way there is something a lot more honest about it than still spending quite a lot of time grooming but basically trying to look as though you haven't. Grayson Perry featured this in the program he is doing at the moment about taste and class. It was quite interesting.

The middle classes shudder at the TOWIE look and it is sheer snottery. Referring to a look as "vulgar" or "cheap" says it all I think.

usualsuspect · 16/06/2012 21:30

'Referring to a look as "vulgar" or "cheap" says it all I think'

This

Birdsgottafly · 16/06/2012 21:33

I must say though that my eldest posts photos on FB when she's on a night out and it takes me a while to realise that i know her and her friends!

There are some that i completely don't recognise her on.

BarredfromhavingStella · 16/06/2012 21:53

Each to their own so yes I do think YABU, would be fairly boring if we all sported the same look don't you think?

Wouldn't personally go for the whole Katie Price thing but absolutely love to see goths, now that's an interesting appearance.

VashtiBunyan · 16/06/2012 21:57

Fashions come and go. A lot of women's fashions are time consuming and expensive; this one is no different.

TartyMcFarty · 16/06/2012 22:01

I don't like that look either, but I do wish that any effort I make to look groomed actually made a difference - perhaps that's why they go so OTT.

ShullBit · 16/06/2012 22:07

Meh. I dye my hair (blonde highlights), have manicures, have my eyebrows threaded, and wear mascara which is meant but doesn't with me as my eye lashes fail me gives the false lash effect as other mascaras make mine look non existent still, and I wear eyeliner. No fake tan though, or plucked to nearly bare.

Oh, and I have two tattoos, although only one is on show if I wear vest tops.

Shoot me. It gives me a little confidence boost and I ain't hurting anyone. Just like others who do look like they have rolled in Wotsits aren't. Different stripes and all that jazz.

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 16/06/2012 22:25

I don't get certain looks either, but I won't judge someone for looking a certain way. I get judged all the time because of the way I dress (bleached white hair, shaved bits (on my head that is), alternative clothes and make-up, normally wearing dread extensions).

I'm sure plenty of people don't "get" me either, but I'm quite nice once you get to know me. It's because of the fact I get judged and have disapproving glances aimed at me that I try my hardest not to do the same to others.

newmum001 · 16/06/2012 22:42

Scarletlady can i just say your style sounds amazing! I have a friend who has one side of her head shaved, wears vintage clothes, over the top make up has a million tattoos and she is one of the prettiest girls ive ever seen. She naturally fell into that kind of style and she looks amazing. Im not blonde, dont get spray tans etc but i wear heavy eye make up and paint my nails a different colour every day. I also have tattoos which i love. Each to their own i say.

Tasteslikepanda i fully agree about the guyliner!
