To ask Aldi for a bit of compensation?

Was shopping in Aldi today and picked up a bottle of liquid washing detergent to put in the trolley. As i did this i knocked over the bottle next to it, and as the lid on this bottle was not on properly it went everywhere. All over the floor and all over my Ugg boots.
I went to find an assistant so it could get cleaned up, and she was very apologetic and gave me some blue roll to wipe it off my boots. I explained to her that it would more than likely have ruined the boots as they are suede and she told me to "google ways to get rid of the stain when you get home".
Now i know Uggs are pretty much universally disliked on Mumsnet, but that aside, would it be really grabby to email Aldi and ask for a bit of compensation?
The boots were by no means in perfect condition but were totally wearable and now they are ruined.
So, would I be unreasonable to ask?

Errr good luck with that one Hmm

FutTheShuckUp · 15/06/2012 21:53

It was an accident- nobody died

Loshad · 15/06/2012 21:53

yes you would be very unreasonable to ask - you were the one to knock the bottle over - think yourself lucky they didn't bill you for it.

mummytowillow · 15/06/2012 21:54

Write to their customer services and it will be logged as 'damage to customers property', do not get them cleaned or attempt to clean them yourself. Take photographs, and I would imagine you will have to send them in to them (special mail).

I work in customer services and we usually pay out the whole amount for things like this! Don't let them fob you off, accidents do happen but it wasn't your fault!

Good luck!

Don't spill washing up liquid on your boots.

Also, don't wear Uggs.

DoingTheBestICan · 15/06/2012 21:54

You could ask, have you tried putting them in your washer?
I put mine in and it took a while for them to dry and I had to brush the pile back up but they came up lovely.

BikeRunSki · 15/06/2012 21:54

Could you try washing them? There was a thread last night about putting Uggs in washing machine, and the general consensus was that they came out looking brand spanking new on wool wash.

Loshad · 15/06/2012 21:54

mummy - she already said it was her fault - she knocked the bottle over!

DoingTheBestICan · 15/06/2012 21:55

I wear mine round the house, they are really snugly too.

ShellyBoobs · 15/06/2012 21:55

So you knocked a bottle off the shelf and spoiled it.

Did they make you pay for the damage?

Hmm
DoingTheBestICan · 15/06/2012 21:58

Yes and she also said the lid wasn't on properly.

MrsRudyRudpoo · 15/06/2012 21:59

Hmm i know that it was my fault for knocking the bottle, but it wasn't my fault the lid wasn't on!
Totally appreciate that nobody died and it's not the worst thing that has ever happened but they were bloody expensive and i can't afford to replace them. The fact that i have big swollen pregnancy feet and that those boots are so comfy may be contributing factors to my grabbyness (if that's even a word!)

Actually now I've had a think, YABU it's Aldi FFS-you knocked it off so it's your fault. If they have to start compensating for peoples UGGS then they will have to put up prices!!! Put them in the washer & stop trying to grab some cash for a new pair of UGGS because yours are looking a bit worse for wear!!!

MrsRudyRudpoo · 15/06/2012 22:01

Ooh didn't consider putting them in the washer, thanks. Will give that a go, have nothing to lose.

Put them on a wool wash and don't dry them on a radiator, they'll be fine.

CouthyMow · 15/06/2012 22:06

Also, it's probably not Aldi's fault either - it could have been a customer just in front if you that opened it to smell it, and didn't close it properly. How often are the staff meant to check that every bottle of everything is properly closed when it's customers that open them?

takingiteasy · 15/06/2012 22:09

I've turned into one of those weirdos that sniff washing up liquid and fabric conditioner but I always put the lid back on!

QOD · 15/06/2012 22:10

Tesco bought me new Uggs after I picked up a 4 Pinter of milk and another was slightly stuck to it, fell on the floor and exploded.

I bought a bottle of kitchen spray from Homebase and it leaked in my handbag on the way home. I got a cheque for the handbag and the iPhone it ruined from Homebase. I would write to head office enclosing pictures of the boots.

BettyandDon · 15/06/2012 22:17

It is Aldi's fault btw. They should sell products that are not liable to easily damage things. Most retailers push their suppliers for tamper seals and such for this reason. If a product in their store causes damage they are responsible as they've chosen to sell it.
