Well - if the weather forecast had been less dire, I would have considered setting my alarm to see the transit of venus, but we were due to be covered in cloud here...

I saw the flame this afternoon - took a day off work, took DD out of nursery - again pity about the weather, but it was probably worth it on balance. I think I'd have regretted not making the effort to see as it went 500 m from my house Grin

not all that bothered about the torch thingy. but i googled someone i used to know, and found that her daughter had just been carrying the torch - it seemed a nice thing to do.

YellowDinosaur · 15/06/2012 23:19

I didn't give a shiny shit about the torch but went to see it today as my boys who are 6 and 4 were really excited about it. And actually I found myself quite moved by it all.not entirely sure why but there you go!

IvySquirrel · 15/06/2012 23:20

YANBU. It is all a load of hype. Olympics good, marketing nonsense arounTud torch not good.

ThisIsNotWhatIWasAfter · 15/06/2012 23:23

YANBU. It took my Dp an extra hour to get home at the end of a 15 hour shift last night because of the bloody thing. Am i the only one who thinks that they look like something kids make at nursery?

PiousPrat · 15/06/2012 23:28

We went to see it today, more for the fact that Bear Grylls was carrying it down a zip line off the Tyne Bridge than anything. I'm now off to my bed after just clearing up after dinner as we have to be up at 6 to get middle child to the meeting point because his school are running a lap of the stadium with it, after having activities laid on for them.

Both those things are worth turning out for IMO. Watching a soggy runner leg it past the end of a road? Yeah I probably wouldn't bother tbh.

Pumpster · 15/06/2012 23:33

I also couldn't give a fiery toss!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 16/06/2012 06:16

Wow so many people in my area! Activities here called off today due to the weather.
Not sure if I am going to go as DD is poorly.

startwig1982 · 16/06/2012 06:38

I saw it and was very excited by it. My reasoning was that I'm very unlikely to see it again. We're also going to the Paralympics. Fwiw, the transit of Venus also happened in 2004. I know this cos I got out of bed at 5am on the day of one of my finals to watch it. So not once in a lifetime event either! Smile

ZeldaUpNorth · 16/06/2012 11:28

DD1 wanted to go see it today (my cousins daughter is actually running with the flame) but i thought it would be later on, apparently it was at 10:30 this morning and i was still in my pj's still am so we missed it. She doesn't seem to bothered though.

mumhaveuseenmy · 16/06/2012 13:43

i cant see how it stays alight in this frikin weather.

Sallyingforth · 16/06/2012 13:45

It doesn't. They just relight it (there is a 'backup flame' in a van)

iwantbrie · 16/06/2012 13:48

clawdy I think that's all we'll end up seeing too :)
I'm not overly bothered but the DC's want to have a look so we'll probably go down.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 16/06/2012 22:58

startwig I know it was in 2004 too, but you won't see another one.

RoxyRobin · 16/06/2012 23:07

Clawdy - I'm naive, too.

DH went to see it this morning on his bike and was telling me about it in tedious detail. I was shocked when he finished up with "...and then they got on the bus with it and drove off"!

I thought the whole point was that it would be carried all the way by walkers under their own steam. It's not too much to ask, is it? What a farce.

GrahamTribe · 16/06/2012 23:11

YANBU. It's apparently due to be visiting my local city soon.

I'm tempted to go along with a fire extinguisher.

BookFairy · 16/06/2012 23:28

YANBU. In my town people came from miles away to carry the torch as part of the olympics package that they have bought.

Menroca16 · 17/06/2012 08:45

If it was one torch (with a back up) and was carried/walked/ran round the country then okay, marginally impressive, but there are zillions of torches that get the bus!!! Farce!

We just went for lunch in Durham and the torch relay people were there. So got up close view and in the warmth. Result!
