Have I just been a 'Tight Cow' ?

I'm feeling really bad and awful.

Collection has just gone round at work for someone who is leaving.

Regardless of whether I know the person who's leaving/getting married/having a baby etc I always put £2 in. If it's someone I'm close to I get a personal gift/card too.

Anyway, I've gone into my purse to find I've got 72p in there, that's it, nothing else, no notes to change etc. So I've put in 70p and signed the card anyway.

I'm not sure what else I could have done but I'm feeling like a right selfish mare so thought I'd share it with you all in the hope you'll just tell me it's one of those things and don't worry!

Yes, it's just one of those things - YANBU. Smile

squeakytoy · 15/06/2012 15:35

stop being daft, it was all you had, so dont worry about it.. there will be some people who put more in and some who didnt put anything in at all..

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 15/06/2012 15:35

It's just one of those things, don't worry! Grin

Seriously, you can't give what you don't actually have. And rushing off to an atm for cash would just be daft.

Forget it.

Rachog · 15/06/2012 15:36

I would do the same, you have contributed there is no specified donation.

phantomnamechanger · 15/06/2012 15:39

what esle could you have done? don't dwell on it OP!

fruitysummer · 15/06/2012 15:40

Thanks Grin

I think I'm just more Blush at the fact that even if I did have chance to get to a cash machine it would make no bloody difference as the pot is empty!

The cash fairies have been this month and I've no idea what the hell they've done with my money the bastards

[off to have a quiet word with my self for over reaction]

SausageSmuggler · 15/06/2012 15:46

What else could you have done? You gave what you could, don't worry about it.

HipHopOpotomus · 15/06/2012 15:50

Yes - you should have given .72p

(just kidding - ah well we give what we can!! Not much else you could have done anyway)

Cash fairies aren't paying me any attention this month either - and next nmonth will be bad as I'll be in OD from this month ..... la la la

MrsKwazii · 15/06/2012 15:50

Better than putting a euro coin in, which always happens in collections at our work. Now that's tight. You put in what you could, don't worry.

rainydaysarebad · 15/06/2012 15:52

Don't worry about it. I never put money in the envelope at work. Not because I'm tight, but because I didn't know or work with half thr people that left and I was being paid peanuts so wasnt in the position to put loads in there. Stop stressing.

AKE2012 · 15/06/2012 16:13

Forget about it, theres nothing you could have done and can do. Its over with. If it was me I wouldnt have put anything in as I am a 'tight cow'. I barely have enough money to pay the bills.

ConferencePear · 15/06/2012 17:03

Don't worry about it. The largest donation I'v ever made was for a man I really disliked. I did it on the grounds that I'd ever been so pleased to see anybody leave.

catinboots · 15/06/2012 17:06

We had a round of redundancies last year. Leaving collections + leaving drinks + the usual student charity events = costing me a small fortune to go to work

I knew someone who used to deliberately NOT take change in her purse she got that sick of always having to fork out on average about 5 times a week for someone's baby/retirement/birthday/cherry popping/cat being run over.

It wasn't me! No way. I'd never do that because I'm made of fucking money aren't I especially when I was a student!

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 15/06/2012 17:18

YABU, you shouldn't have given anything at all Grin

I hate collections!

Abra1d · 15/06/2012 17:24

My current big gripe is sponsoring people for walks, cycles, runs, etc.

Our friends know we are managing on my not-quite-full time and not very generous earnings, since my husband was made redundant 15 months ago. But they keep on asking us to sponsor them.

We are just about managing to keep our monthly charitable direct debits going, but this constant request for sponsorships is a pain. Perhaps we just don't look poor enough!

MammaTJ · 15/06/2012 17:25

Where I work, people usually give a months notice that they are leaving. Then the collections starts shortly after. We never have the excuse of not having money on us!
Just had to give to the collection for someones wedding. I had already offered to make their wedding cake as a gift. Ah well, I gave anyway! I do love her to bits!!

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 15/06/2012 17:36

Abra1d, it's a gripe of mine too!

Generally it's because they want to travel and have the trip of a lifetime rather than help the charity. Someone on my FB friends recently wanted to do a sponsored cycle ride in China, and needed to raise a minimum of 5k before any money would go to the charity. So the 5k was just the expenses! I ended up hiding her statuses as they were all just effectively begging letters.

numbertaker · 15/06/2012 17:41

No, I don't think YABU. I worked in a large office and there was always 3 or four envelopes going round. If I knew the person I was generous. I always put in but I kept a bag of coins in my desk for the less well known people. In the end it was getting so expensive I used to put my hand in the envelope and rattle. Grin Shock

Abra1d · 15/06/2012 19:17

Hexgonal--yes, the foreign-based sponsored activities really do seem an expensive way to raise funds.

Sponsored children's walk in rainy England, OK, I will, despite my moanings here, go through my purse and find some coins because that shows some gumption, but well-paid adult going to China? Bah.
