....to think she was talking utter rubbish?

This morning on the local radio station they were discussing litter on our streets. The show?s host thinks that educating people isn?t working and that we should now just accept that dropping litter is the norm and we should give up and just employ people to pick it up. Despite each caller disagreeing with her she was adamant that educating people was impossible, the litter problem is getting worse.

The first caller disagreed and said that we should continue to educate the young. He talked about rubbish in cars and keeping it in a bag until you get time to dispose of it correctly rather than throwing it out of the window which many people think is the norm.

The second caller thought that we should continue to educate people however thought that those ?on the dole? could also pick it up. Hmm

Idiot mentality, unemployed people should be looking for work and improving their skills, not out on the street because ?they?ve nothing better to do?.

Final caller used to work for the highways dept and stated that 93million alone is spent cleaning litter from the motorways and trunk roads. He thinks we should still educate people.

I was taught about litter at school and I don?t drop litter now, clearly education worked for me.

Personally, I would like to see our children continually educated about litter and the environment. And, if we need people to clear litter then perhaps those charged with community service could get involved in projects to pick it up (I'm sure they do already). If we employ people to pick up after us doesn't it send out the wrong message? It?s about respect at the end of the day.

We should be doing all of those things...educating and employing people.

I also see nothing wrong with community service or long term unemployed picking litter up.

It doesn't have to be an 'either/or' situation.

Of course we should pick up litter, shouldnt be dropped in the first place.

Not sure why you object to people on the dole doing this, my bil has been on jsa for years. He does nothing all day, watches tv all day. Has no friends, Is very isolated, he would benefit from being with a group of people whether that's picking litter or a computer course. Having a reason to get up would be a start for him

children are educated about litter and the majority of people I know set an excellent example to their children.

the road side verges are often litter picked where i live but that is because we are on a major route to a landfill site and the stuff flies out of the lorries. I dont think that the unemployed should be made to go and pick litter. I think that people should be employed to do so.

my dbro was made to go pick litter in an orange boiler suit as part of his punishment for drink driving (he lives in the States).

anyone who needs to be told not to drop their shit on the floor isn't going to listen to more "education". Fine the fuck out of them instead, massive amounts. Order litter droppers to wear big signs saying "I'm a dirty bastard" while picking up litter.

We already do employ people to pick up litter. Who do you think picks up all the litter from the streets in towns and cities?

Of course people shouldn't drop litter, but some people do. So it needs to be picked up. Just like people shouldn't break the law, but we have the police to deal with it when they do.

my friend who is a CM once had a potential new mother& child visit to suss her out. while there the child, aged 3, ate an apple and tossed the core onto the CM carpet !! - the mother never said a word!! there was no way she could not have seen so my firend waited a few seconds then said to the child, very nicely, X theres a bin just there. the kid looked at her, then looked away and ignoreed her. the mother did not apologise even then tho she did bin the core! so kids get used to no consequences and someone else clearing up after them.

it IS about education, from being tiny mine have always loathed litter and gone on about it hurting animals etc

round here we have a huge problem with bottles of pee being dumped on roundabouts by lorry drivers - utterly utterly disgusting. When I explained to DS they were not orange juice even he was grossed out and at aged 7 poo wee bums and willies are his favourite subjects!
