To think that the gap between children's sizes is too big?

I'm trying to buy some clothes for our winter holiday in the unseasonal sales. I calculate that ds will be about 142-3cm by then, using his red book as a guide, but the sizes available are 140 or 152cm... argh. Almost half a foot...

It's too much for my brain and I don't know which to buy. Either everything will be slightly too small or will be bunching around his legs (though at least then it might last a couple of years). But he is very skinny so I have a dread it will also be hanging off him.

Heeelp me and my stupid dilemma!!

Oh it's so awkward isn't it! I think you should use judgement...coats for instance are fine too big. They just are...I have 2 DC aged 7 and 4...the 7 year old is small to average and yet I buy her clothing for 8 to 9 or 9 to 10....I would never buy her trousers in a 9 to 10....but coats, t shirts and jumpers...go for the larger size. They last longer and sleeves can be turned back.

Jeans etc...just go one up....and get elasticated or adjustable waists. As a point of interst my Dd has barely grown an inch since this time last year...stick to clothes for the upper body in the bigger sizes.

There isn't that much difference.

It's usually only a couple if inches difference, if that. The child might grow 6 inches, but the manufacturers won't randomly tack half a foot of material onto their trousers Grin.

Buy too big if you're unsure. And remember that helpfully, all shops size differently.

YANBU, especially when they only do sizes like 8-9 and then they jump straight to 10-11. I was shopping for my small 9 yo yesterday, and everything was either too big or too small for him.

Sirzy · 15/06/2012 11:25

Just buy too big. Ds (2.5) is just moving into 18-24 clothes which drown him really but at least we will get lots of wear from them. I would rather him wear things too big than too small!

H&m is great for a skinny child especially boys They are slim fit clothes and generous in the leg length. Worth a look. And they sell online. Boden (I know I'm sorry) offer a year return policy as well so if you bought now and they were too small by Xmas in theory you should be able to return if you keep receipts etc.

CrumpettyTree · 15/06/2012 11:28

If in doubt go for the bigger size

ovariantryst · 15/06/2012 11:46

Thank you! I will buy a size up (even in ski wear) and feed him like a pate goose for the next few months to make sure he achieves maximum growth potential... :)

I suppose he will always grow into things, but if they're too small they are useless, aren't they? I just wish there was something in between so it didn't have to be such a gamble...

I find that really bloody annoying too!

I find buying clothes that fit well especially pants for my two is nightmare at the best of times without the huge jumps.

I bought age 9 school summer dresses for my 6, nearly 7 yo daughter, who is about 125cm, dresses are supposed to be for 140cm height, and they are only just down to her knees, probably will be too short by next summer!

MarysBeard · 15/06/2012 12:27

Even more annoying when it happens in women's clothing. Hmm, should I squeeze into a 10 - 12, or flap around in a 14 - 16?

EssexGurl · 15/06/2012 12:35

YANBU! DD is big for her age. She has just turned 3. All her 2-3 age clothes are getting too small but the 3-4 age trousers are all too long, so we are having to turn them up at the moment. T-shirts are OK but the trousers are a total nightmare!

MarysBeard · 15/06/2012 12:54

Yeah, had that issue with DD1 re trouser length at 3. Not so with DD2 at 3, who fits into DD1's age 4-5 trousers :)
