To swap my kindle for a book - DP going off on one

Me and my friend have always bought books and swapped them, makes sense. Then however I developed OCD and just can't have books lying around, there is nowhere for them to go and they make a mess so I bought a kindle.

My friend however has just bought a new book she wants to lend me and I'd downloaded a book I think she'd love - so I suggested she borrow the kindle and I'll borrow the book.

DP is kicking off saying it's ridiculous to swap a £110 "gadget" for a £4 book and he's really quite angry. My mum agrees with him!! it's not as if it's a permanent swap!

AIBU?

I don't see the problem as long as it's not a permanent swap & you trust your friend to look after your kindle. Would she replace it if it got damaged?

TeacupTempest · 15/06/2012 09:19

If you trust your friend then yanbu...

jamaisjedors · 15/06/2012 09:19

Your DP is a loon.

But then you know that!

seeker · 15/06/2012 09:20

How dare he be angry about this- it's your kindle and your friend. Absolutely none of his business!

FrankieAnne · 15/06/2012 09:20

Yes I think she would but I know what she's like, she's very careful with stuff and has no kids so I'm sure it will be fine there

It'syours. it's up to you who you lend or don't lend it to. Tell him- ever so politely- to butt out!

fedupofnamechanging · 15/06/2012 09:51

Not his business. You are an adult and have the right to decide whether to lend your property to your friend. He's got no business being angry about something that is essentially fuck all to do with him.

Sandalwood · 15/06/2012 10:18

Do they think she's going to run off into the sunset with your kindle, never to be seen again then?

Magneto · 15/06/2012 10:21

I wouldn't do it. They're more fragile than a normal gadget in my experience. But it's yours and if you want to take the risk that's fine.

fedupofnamechanging · 15/06/2012 10:34

Just a thought, but I have all my trashy, embarrassing reads on my kindle. if you are the same, then you might not want to share!

scrablet · 15/06/2012 10:37

My DH wouldn't have a clue if I had done something like this. Why did you tell him?

Lueji · 15/06/2012 10:43

You may want to be clear with your friend about what happens if it gets damaged.

On the other hand, in her place, I'm not sure I'd want to swap just in case it was damaged.

imnotmymum · 15/06/2012 10:43

If she is your friend then she should be trusted to look after it. My DH would not give a toss what I leant and to whom. And your Mum involved ?? Wow OP.

seeker · 15/06/2012 10:45

If my friend offered to do a swap like this with me, and then started to go into details about my responsibility if I broke it, I suspect she would soon be an ex friend!

numbertaker · 15/06/2012 10:51

I am finding that situation where I would like to lend a book, but its on kindle.

Hell would freeze over before I would lend my kindle out. Having broken my first one on the first day.

Hey ho!

Let your friend put your kindle account on her phone or PC then she can read it and you keep the kindle. Actually she can just get the software and you can 'lend' the book electronically.
