to not attend all the school events?

DD bought home a letter tonight with all the things happening in the last 5 weeks of school:

Sports day
Concert
Prize-giving assembly
Praise assembly
Meeting with next years teacher
Curriculum meeting

I can't attend these things due to work without it causing inconvenience to my colleagues.

Does everyone else attend every school event?

No I don't. I go to what I can but it's not always possible

fridayfreedom · 14/06/2012 23:42

friend once texted me at sports day to say she couldn't see me, where was I....texted back...In IKEA!! no, didn't go to everything!!

Goofus · 14/06/2012 23:44

No! I'm a SAHM too!

I have a 2yo DC who is an absolute handful and tends to throw the biggest tantrums at any of these kind of events so I tend to steer clear a lot of the time.

2blessed2bstressed · 14/06/2012 23:44

Well I do, but I'm lucky in that regard because I'm a sahm.

kid · 14/06/2012 23:47

I go to what I can around work. I am fortunate enough to get all of the school holidays off work so can't really expect more time off to attend assemblies and trips at DCs school.
The school do try and cater for working parents at times but obviously a majority of events do take part during the day.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 14/06/2012 23:55

I go to almost everything, but my work is flexible because many of us have dc. I love these school events, it's like a little insight into the life they have away from home and family. It's a way of getting to know the school better and I think the closer the link between school and parents the better it is for the child. Plus, they would be dissapointed if I didn't go.

WorraLiberty · 14/06/2012 23:58

What Freddos said.

But I'm lucky enough to be a SAHM with no younger ones.

My DS(13) always has evening stuff though and that can prove tricky sometimes. He's got a presentation evening next week and they've limited it to 2 tickets per child which means if we can't get childcare for our 9yr old, only one of us can go to it.

missingmumxox · 15/06/2012 00:26

we try to go, but we are selective sometimes only one can go but up to now we have managed it and both have attended, HD away working so probably not going to be possible now
Sports day - would go as all the children are involved
Concert - only if DC in it
Prize-giving assembly - tbh I know I could ask the class teacher if they stood a hope in, they are very aware of the working parents and have due to me asking given me the heads up on these...I haven't gone Grin it helps to bred non achievers sometimes
Praise assembly -no
Meeting with next years teacher - yes
Curriculum meeting - I assume this is secondary school so not on my radar yet but this would be a priority if about exam selection

RubyFakeNails · 15/06/2012 00:29

I don't go to all of them, its just not possible. When DS and DD1 (both 16) were younger and had all these events I worked full time, was the only person in my office who had children and it wasn't possible for DH or I to attend any of them really.

Things are a bit different now with DD2 but its still difficult when working.

Is thee someone else you can send? Grandparents, Aunties, Older Cousins, Godparents all used to do things like sports day and concerts.

Buntingbunny · 15/06/2012 00:36

I'm a SAHM, but I "forget" merit assembly as often as possible, it sends me to ZZzzzz.

I hate sports day, DH somehow always manages to be busy and it's alway boiling or freezing.

Senior school concerts are very variable, some are good others have endless GCSE pieces and go on for ever.

If you can I would try to go to the meeting with next years teacher and then ask your daughter which of the other events she would like you at most and go to that one.

t0lk13n · 15/06/2012 06:49

Euphemia...same here plus I teach 45 mins from where I live so impossible unless parents evening. My son is now 17 so not much to attend these days. It will be strange when that link between school and home is gone. I have been involved in my sons schools since 1988 and seems strange to think in 1-2 yrs time that to-ing and fro-ing will be over. Oooh all nostalgic at 10 to 7 in the morning. Better get ready for school myself!
