Just been to buy some - Free Range - medium - box of 12 £3.09.

How is it that they seem to go up each week almost?

I like eggs - we have got through the dozen I bought on Monday already.

The price of eggs has gone up since Jan 1st. On that date newer, more humane cages became compulsory in the EU and almost all British farmers complied with the rule.
Farmers on the continent did not put the same investment in and so, in fairness to our own farmers who had invested so much money in the new cages, we stopped importing eggs from the continent.
I try to pay up and look cheerful because I know I'm paying for improved welfare for the hens.

iseenodust · 14/06/2012 22:09

M&S do a box of 10 free range but mixed sizes that always seems better price than Tesco box of 6 large.

backwardpossom · 14/06/2012 22:09

We get our eggs from the fishmonger - 6 free range eggs for 60p. Cracking Grin

Did you see what I did there? Eh? Eh?

KalSkirata · 14/06/2012 22:18

5 hens here in inner city garden 14 feet by 20 feet. usually 3 eggs a day (they are getting older. When they were young it was 5 eggs a day.I was gining them away!)

ivykaty44 · 14/06/2012 22:23

6 free range eggs for 60p - We get our eggs from the fishmonger - from your fishmonger..?

seems a bit fishy to me Wink

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 14/06/2012 22:25

We get 30 mixed sized free range eggs from our local farm shop for £3.00, and you can see the chickens roaming around the farm so no question about them being free range Grin

Pixel · 14/06/2012 23:18

FrillyMilly, some councils let you keep chickens on allotments, some don't so you need to check before you put your name on a waiting list. I have an allotment but not allowed livestock.
Might be worth asking your landlord though if you do want chooks. Our landlord won't let us have a dog or anything so I was pretty sure he wouldn't allow chooks, but eventually plucked (ha ha) up courage and asked. Was really surprised when he said yes, as long as we don't bring them in the house (why would I anyway? Hmm). Now have 3 hens in a run down by the shed, all merrily laying an egg a day each and polishing off all my kitchen scraps and dandelions!

Krumbum · 15/06/2012 01:08

Don't buy free range then.

cazboldy · 15/06/2012 01:25

the yolks are very yellow if the hens have been eating maize..... like why corn fed chickens flesh has that yellow tinge

useless fact of the day.....

oh and if you have "woodland eggs" and the yolks are a bit green (and you know they are fresh!) then they have probably eaten acorns

cazboldy · 15/06/2012 01:25

and the nicest eggs for cake baking are ducks eggs Smile

sashh · 15/06/2012 05:18

Ducks' eggs make great Yorkshire pudding too.

Paiviaso · 15/06/2012 09:00

If you have a garden, I would highly recommend keeping your own hens. We have 3, they lay around 18 eggs a week! Good pets that "earn" their keep, so to speak.

summerintherosegarden · 15/06/2012 09:04

They've gone up, but if you consider that 2 eggs = one serving of protein, you are getting 6 servings of protein for just over £3. You would pay £3 for a single free range chicken breast fillet.

Eggs are brilliant. I never used to buy them unless I was baking; now that they're in my veg box order (£1.95 for half dozen, so I think yours' are quite a good deal) I eat them all the time and love, love, love them.

bronze · 15/06/2012 09:04

Feed has rocketed It has gone up almost half as much again it is really expensive now.
And my blighters are hardly laying, the freeloaders

There is apparantly a national egg shortage due to so many farms folding after battery hens been banned. So price has gone up.

I didn't realise battery hen farming had been banned. Excellent news!

It was 10 years ago...

MumW · 08/11/2022 23:19

Just be grateful you could get some none in Aldi and hardly any in Sainsburys yesterday. 😁

maddy68 · 08/11/2022 23:21

There is avian flu which is reducing supplies -not mentioning the increases due to brexit etc-

5foot5 · 08/11/2022 23:23
Grin I was looking at this thinking "Well that's reasonable" until I saw the date.

FFS why do people resurrect these ZOMBIE threads. Looking at you @Niteewotcha

TheChosenTwo · 08/11/2022 23:30

Haha just seen this is a zombie thread, I was thinking blimey these are cheap eggs! Ocado sells them for £5 for 10 eggs 😂 (burfords are the only ones we used to buy)we have our own burford brown chickens now so don’t buy eggs anymore. Constantly have too many so we share them with friends/family/neighbours, whoever happens to pop in.
They are really entertaining as pets but now have to be covered in their runs now because of avian bird flu issues again. Shame as they love running about in the garden chasing magpies off the grass. They do have a lovely big run though with things to play on and scratch about in so I don’t feel too guilty for them, just not quite the same for them.
