To think tandems are naff and embarassing and to not want to go on one?

I like cycling for fun and my dh likes cycling competitively. He's really encouraging though and will happily cycle along with me on my lady bike for an afternoon. We've always wanted to cycle round Holland (nice and flat, you see) but last night he came home from work, full of excitement. His friend has offered to lend us a tandem. I think I would die of embarrassment.

I get that I cycle slower and I like to look at the scenery etc. I get that he likes to go a bit faster and I may hold him back a bit. But a tandem?

Would you get on such a shameful item, behind your dh?

James Bond on a tandem Grin

The only reason I wouldn't get on a tandem is 'cos I'm too scared of how fast we'd go, and wouldn't want the responsibility of steering and braking as it would be my fault in the crash (the bigger person does need to steer and as I'm 75kg and DP is 52kg that would be me) I did recently tease some local tandemers that I'd taken a long time to catch them when stopped at a light, so then they came steaming past me - I didn't manage to drop them after, but then they were on a touring tandem and I was on my full race bike...

CMOTdibbler trike racing is awesome! The cornering that's done on them is brilliant!

Takver It's more fun if it's not your OH? You are talking about tandems now?

FredFredGeorge - only the tandem riding Grin

Mainly because he has a bad knee and I know think I'd end up pushing us both up the hills!

CMOTDibbler · 14/06/2012 22:29

Other peoples cornering is. But as I'm only steering with one hand, mine is not good. But it satisfies ds's wish for family bike rides.

What you need is one of these. I keep trying to persuade DP onto a tandem, as although I love cycling and am getting faster and stronger, he is considerably faster and stronger than I am. He doesn't trust me not to sit there and let him do all the work, and says that he will only agree to ride a tandem with me if he gets to sit at the back - with a cattle prod! Grin

I have to say that the tandem in my link would be very awesome.

You might think differently if when you have your feet up relaxing while he does all the work.
