to want a father's day card that suits our situation

Wondering if anyone knows where I could get a Father's day card which doesn't harp on about my Dad being the world's best, or something equally gushy. Because the truth is he's not anything like that. I don't even think he'd answer my call if I rang him. I just want to acknowledge the day.

I love Moonpig cards esp with a photo on.

fairyfriend · 13/06/2012 21:11

Well, erm...what's the point? If he's a shit dad don't send him a card!

Seriously though, you can get ones that just say 'happy Father's Day' in most card shops.

leothecentipede · 13/06/2012 21:15

Well there is that. I still don't know if there's any point in sending one. But, be the bigger person and all that...

Cards to send when the circumstances are less than rosy and gushy are quite hard to find. My parents and I have a good relationship but it isn't into big hugs and love youuuuus so it can be hard to find anything really suitable.

Much better than DH though, who for the only year that I left him to buy his dad a birthday card by himself came back with a card that went on about his dad being the best, the most organised, the most good looking etc. etc. and then inside said 'and now you can give this to mum' or some such. His parents were going through a rather messy separation at the time Hmm

There are loads. I sent my dad this one from paperchase (he owns a shop selling bacon sarnies)

Or a blank card in which you can write Happy Father's Day yourself. Lots of those.

Is it meant to be ironic?

Snowboarder · 13/06/2012 21:28

I know what you mean. I had 3 to buy this year - one for my DH who really IS a wonderful father, one for my Stepdad who has been LIKE a father to me, and one for my actual dad who is a feckless, foul mouthed, drug using ex-alcoholic. I had no problems buying one for the first two situations, but it seems the third isn't covered that extensively in Clintons.

YesMaam · 13/06/2012 21:34

Paperchase also had a Father's Day card saying something like the "Fifth best father in the world" I cannot remember quite why they weren't the best father but it made me chuckle although I thought it was a little too close to the bone for my FIL so didn't buy it!

TroublesomeEx · 13/06/2012 21:47

I wouldn't send a card unless I wanted to, tbh. If you're doing it to be the bigger person or because it's the done thing, rather than because you actually want to, it's pretty meaningless anyway.

I mean if he wouldn't even answer the phone to you, really what is the point?

snowboarder why would you buy one for your 'actual dad' then? Personally, I would feel that devalues the ones that were genuinely deserved. These days are such a minefield for anyone who has less than adequate parents Sad

leothecentipede · 13/06/2012 21:50

Thank you for comments. I think I'll have a look into making one online. I've searched in shops and there were no simple ones.

why send one.. they are not compulsory..

Xmasbaby11 · 13/06/2012 21:53

I found some good understated ones at John Lewis. I don't like gushy ones and most of the other shops had ones which didn't suit him, e.g. a bear playing golf

Buntingbunny · 13/06/2012 22:04

My Dad is wonderful, but he hates football, doesn't play golf and doesn't drink has made Fathers' and birthday cards a pita since I was a child.

He does sail, so I gleefully presented him with a picture of a sailing ship only to have him mutter "it's rigged wrong" Grrrr

vj32 · 13/06/2012 22:05

I have this problem. Often I 'forget' father's day as it is too difficult.

DamnBamboo · 13/06/2012 23:57

Just buy some nice stationary-type notelet things and write him a note.

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 14/06/2012 00:15

yeah, I have this problem too. the dc's make one instead.
