AIBU to not get the worry over eating Indian/ Chinese food? I see threads on here and other websites about people fretting over eating a korma or some noodles and I just don't get it. What exactly do people think is going to happen to them or their child by eating a curry? Surely in India/ China such things are just called 'food'? I wonder if there is an Indian Mumsnet with posts saying ' I've just eaten roast chicken, will my baby be ok?' I was recently told after mentioning to a colleague I was going out for a curry to 'make sure I was careful'! About what exactly??? Noone would tell me to careful of my battered cod would they? Urgh. I appreciate that this is pointless and other peoples eating habits don't matter to me but this annoys me, I also don't understand why, if you are actually concerned about these things you wouldn't ask your midwife or check the nhs site rather than ask untrained people what is safe or not?

I'd like a biscuit please, but I'm pregnant so please make sure its safe for me to eat.

I've never heard this. Is it because people get diarrhea if they eat very hot currys they arnt used to? Other than that it's just people fearing something that's a bit different!

mumtoone123 · 13/06/2012 18:11

Probably because takeaways are full of salt and sugar etc, poor quality meat etc. Biscuit

WorraLiberty · 13/06/2012 18:20

I've never heard anyone say it.

SardineQueen · 13/06/2012 18:27

No worries of that nature around my locality.

pantylace · 13/06/2012 18:40

Ha! Mention the word curry in this house and we're all going out for one!

Never heard of it before, unless you mean when going off to India? That's when I get the Deli Belly stories.

ohdoone · 13/06/2012 18:57

Really? Maybe I go on too many pregnancy sites at the moment! I've seen it on the mumsnet pregnancy section recently. Pantylace, I'm the same, loads of take aways near my work, its torture from lunch time onwards with the smell!

Thanks for the biscuit mumtoone, I hope there aren't nuts in it though, as according to 'most helpful childless never been pregnant due to the fact you are a MAN' work mate I'm not to eat them either...

SardineQueen · 13/06/2012 19:13

Sounds like it's your workmate who is being a pain!

I had some like that when I was pg, it's annoying, suddenly loads of random people trying to tell you what to do.

squeakytoy · 13/06/2012 19:16

the food that everyday people eat in china and india is nothing at all like the food that is served in restaurants over here..

so the salt content, and flavourings in the dishes that we get are probably not the best thing for a very small child

Gumby · 13/06/2012 19:18

Takeaways are not the everyday fare of the Chinese and Indian People

Otherwise they'd be obsese countries like us and the US

SardineQueen · 13/06/2012 19:22

Street food is very popular in Asia, if the programs on the telly are to be believed.

lels99 · 13/06/2012 19:22

I love chinese and indian but got warned about reheated rice as apparently they are one of the worst things for storing bacteria? I could be wrong?

SardineQueen · 13/06/2012 19:23

Sorry that is a bit cryptic.
So yes people eat plenty of "take aways".

SardineQueen · 13/06/2012 19:25

The difference is less of it, and more exercise in daily life.

nailak · 13/06/2012 19:27

i have seen it to, not just take aways but people on here worrying they are going to cook a curry and will their pfb be able to manage it at 2 years old etc

JoanOfNark · 13/06/2012 19:36

I got severe food poisoning when 8 months pregnant from a cheeseburger from the chipper. Thought I was going to die.

But this is random and doesn't mean pregnant women shouldn't eat cheeseburgers. The paranoia during pregnancy is rampant and rather daft at the extreme end..."OMG, I just ate a peanut, what will happen?!"

ohdoone · 13/06/2012 21:14

Oh good, its not just me that's come across it then! Sardinequeen, yep work mate is getting on my nerves with his wisdom!

Yes Joanofnark, people are insane with what worries them, I do wonder how much of it is just attention seeking. Obviously some foods aren't advised for legitimate reasons but the odd takeaway? There's definately something wrong with me at the moment though as you are talking about horrific food poisoning from a cheese burger and I'm thinking 'mmmm must have cheese burger'! In a homer Simpson voice in my head.

I definitely read on mumsnet that I should be avoiding Chinese food when I was pregnant. I ignored it. As I ignored the advice not to paint my nails. Load of rubbish.

I did have horrible food poisoning from reheated (home-cooked) rice when I was about 3 days pregnant (I didn't know I was pregnant) and then norovirus so badly at 30 ish weeks that I could only crawl between bed and the bathroom. Baby was absolutely fine and a v healthy 9lb.

olibeansmummy · 13/06/2012 22:28

I know I get told ds is 'really good' for eating hot curries, chilli, reggae reggae sauce etc ( he's 3 not a baby, although spicy foods have always been his favourite). Ffs surely he's just normal?!

NotGeoffVader · 13/06/2012 22:40

I got all that when I was pregnant - as well as 'Is everything, you know, ok....well, because you're an older mum-to-be'
People who were normally perfectly rational telling me I shouldn't eat curry, and most certainly not when I was breastfeeding, I shouldn't eat garlic (ditto), and I shouldn't eat any nuts.

I ignored all this advice, ate what I normally would have, and continued to do so through the year DD wished to be breastfed. We had no problems at all.

Tell your colleague to bog off! Wink
