I get the real grrs when I see these obscured plates.

I obey the law ignoring previousminor speeding, now a limit lover, wtaf shouldn't they?

Number plates are there for a reason.

AIBU or petty and puhthetic?

YANBU

ComposHat · 13/06/2012 01:07

YANBU - registration plates are a standard size, colour and font so they can be easily recognised.

I bet those who claim you are being a nitpicker would soon change their tune if their car was pranged and they couldn't get the number of the fleeing motorist because the plate was in some hideous italic serif font.

SingingSands · 13/06/2012 01:18

You're not alone, OP, I feel exactly the same!

Ditto for those people who can't afford fancy-pants personalised plates and who instead use a black screwhead to turn "11" into "H" or whatever... grrr!

bogeyface · 13/06/2012 01:22

What annoys me more is when the police seem to ignore them. There is a twat who has plates like this, fucked about and in an illegal font, who parks in the carpark opposite my house. The police also sometimes park there for their beat, and a year later, he still has the plates!

I have never heard of anyone getting into trouble for this, except on that Police, camera, arseholes program!

I agree it is the conduct of a complete Knobber

(or should that be K N 0 13 13 E R)

If they really want a personalised plate, do what Viz's Top Tips recommended 'Save on the costs of a personalised plate by changing your name by deed poll to G 261 PAF'

bogeyface · 13/06/2012 01:27

:o I remember that one Compos!

tartyflette · 13/06/2012 01:34

Actually, friend of mine got an £80 on the spot fine for having the wrong spacing on the plate -- the font was OK but they had tweaked the letters and numbers, similar to above. Grin

Lueji · 13/06/2012 01:34

My ex did get in trouble with his first car, which had a different font when he bought it.

Note to self: major red flag, that particular car.

tartyflette · 13/06/2012 01:38

I'm thinking Subaru Impreza with gold wheels, "Lueji*....

bogeyface · 13/06/2012 01:38

I take it back then, must just be my local police that are crap!

Do you think that these people know that when we see J08NNY or whatever, we actually read W4NK3R?

tartyflette · 13/06/2012 01:38

that worked well. s/b Lueji of course.

bogeyface · 13/06/2012 01:40

Gold wheels? He didnt need a reg plate to tell everyone he is a tosser with that :o

tartyflette · 13/06/2012 01:41

Perhaps if depends on whether they need to bump up their 'stop' numbers that day, BogeyGrin

Thumbwitch · 13/06/2012 01:42

YANBU really but they're not half as bloody annoying as the cloned plates which get other people into trouble. I had my car plates cloned twice in the UK; thankfully it was easy enough to prove that my car was a green rover and not a white transit van or blue peugeot as in the camera photos - but it was still a PITA to have to go through the hassle of contacting TfL or whoever.

A friend of mine also had her plates cloned and was sent a parking fine for being in a nonparking zone 50m away from where she worked, when her own car was parked at her place of work all day. For some reason, Bromley Council were unwilling to accept her "excuse" Hmm and it took a fair bit of effort to prove it wasn't her parked in Bromley!

bogeyface · 13/06/2012 01:46

Clever cloners take reg numbers from the same make and model car, so it is even hard to prove. How are you supposed to prove you were at home all day for eg?

EduStudent · 13/06/2012 02:09

I know someone who was fined twice. Cos he had a tantrum the first time and refused to change them. Same copper the next week Grin

That learnt 'im!

bogeyface · 13/06/2012 02:10

Was his reg TO YR 01D by any chance? :o

I take it he changed them after that?

Thumbwitch · 13/06/2012 02:19

oo that's scary Bogey. I suppose CCTV might help but it isn't everywhere!
Bloody cloners Angry

NovackNGood · 13/06/2012 02:27

YABU since if anything the dogdy placed screw probably made the number more memorable and the DVLC should easily be able to decode the possible real number variants and especially if the mark of car is know too.

You should be more worried about the number of motorist with the 007 style number plate changers with a stolen made up number displayed for when they are doing a fast run on the motorway ten changed back when they get into town. They seem to be all the rage in Spain at the moment especialy after the police made an announcement about them so now everyone wants one. If they are not in the UK yet they soon will be. Seem to be popular on motorbikes.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 13/06/2012 10:40

But but bit NovackN, the ANPR cameras won't recognise the plates and the naughty car owners will get away with stuff and badness.

Snot fair.
