I know this story IS funny but it's mortifying too so bear with me.

I sat my GCSEs in 1997 and in one of the exams (Maths, I think) - I had had some high fibre cereal forced down me by my mum and I was nervous and with one thing and another, I farted loudly in the middle of the silent exam hall.

I'm now 31 with a DD who turns one at the end of the month and one of my friends persists in bringing up this story! The thing is we lost touch for a while then met at baby group as her DS is the same age as DD. first time she saw me and it was "oh I know you ha ha you farted in the Maths exam!"

AIBU to ask her to stop going on about it, or a misery guts? It was funny but a long time ago ...

YANBU - what a way to be remembered Blush

Iggly · 12/06/2012 18:41

Grin you're the same age as me. Which school....??

Just shrug it off. She'll keep raising it otherwise. I bet she can sense smell your embarrassment so don't rise to it!

HecateTrivia · 12/06/2012 18:42

own it. Make it your funny story. It then has no power over you.

I have a load of cringy stories that I happy tell and lovingly embellish Grin

It honestly is the best approach.

Have you seen the exams episode of The Inbetweeners?

It could have been worse than a fart...Grin

"yes that was me, ha ha. At least I didn't follow through like that time in the park when you blamed it on the white lightening, ha ha have you ever managed to live that one down yet."

TeapotsInJune · 12/06/2012 18:45

Oh no iggly! Did you have a "girl who farted in the Maths exam" story? Grew up in Cambridgeshire!

You are more sympathetic than DH who said "you farted in an exam?" and laughed loudly!

I do want to tell her to get over it. I do not wish to be known forevermore as the farter!

Love that reply ^ Do that, definitely
YANBU, by the way. I really don't like people who insist upon bringing up past embarassing /drunken indiscretions to humilate other people, it's horrible.

Woman called horse - shame! I love my username too (DD was born June 30 and my waters broke when I was sitting in the garden with afternoon tea! So silly but as DH was born in July I hoped they wouldn't share a month and then along came my obliging baby who is now nearly one - cant believe it!

I think maybe your original post has the best way of dealing with it.... next time she brings it up laugh with her while saying "Oh get over it, it was funny but it was a long time ago!". Hopefully she'll realise that, in my darling mother's words, "it was funny the first time"..... :)

Iggly · 12/06/2012 18:56

No I didn't, just wondered Grin I'm London, so you're safe Grin

TheMonster · 12/06/2012 19:05

If she keeps doing it you'll have to say something.
