about going for an injection in my spine for sciatic pain ? I posted elsewhere, but didn't get a reply.
Its really going to hurt, isn't it ?
I know I ought to be glad that something may help me, but I am a right scaredy cat about hospitals.
Tell me to pull myself together, please.

Please don't be scared. My dad had this done, he had 6 injections directly into the spinal column. He is needle phobic and they we're really good with him

So, pull yourself together and go for it. you won't believe the relief from the pain - my dad was like a new man!

rhondajean · 12/06/2012 16:50

Candy I've had two epidurals and before hand I swore I would never let them near me ( I saw the size of the needles!) but as it turned out I needed them (low heartrate/ potential CS needed and one emcs).

Now I know it's a different thing but I swear I never felt a thing, I think they anesthetiser the area first, and I'm sure they will be just as good with you.

Just keep your eyes shut and im sure it will be worth it.

Birnamwood · 12/06/2012 16:59

I've had this done. The worst bit for me was wearing those bloody paper pants!

I also had six injections but they use local anaesthetic first so the only pain you get is from those, it stings a bit at first then it's ok. You have to lie on your front very still to have them done so make sure you're comfy and have your basoomas arranged right :) I got a bit uncomfortable as they were any which way Blush. I had a nurse with me all the time, explaining and reassuring, which was helpful.

They are done under X-ray, which I could watch on the screen (but I'm weird like that) but you don't have to watch if you don't want to.

Definitely go for it, it's a few minutes of being uncomfortable but the relief after if wonderful (after it takes effect, which sometimes isn't straight away)

Good luck!

Had done 3 seperate occ 1st one did not have pain relief next 2 times had local this was over 2 years
As it did not work had nerves cauterised and it worked

candytuft63 · 12/06/2012 17:10

Thankyou for your replies, kind peeps.
I googled the procedure (I know..I know..) and thoroughly frightened myself.
I hope the paper knicks are big enough Blush

Granny, my surgeon told me that if it didn't work then I could have the cauterisation done and that it has always worked as far as he knows. I am pleased that you got some good results Smile
It is silly of me to be so worked up when actually, I would do anything to be without this pain.

candytuft63 I am looking forward to this in August. Am hobbling round today and in much discomfort grousing and grumbling. Not keen on the idea of the needle but as long as I can't see it, bring it on say I. When are you having it?

IWishIWasSheRa · 12/06/2012 17:31

i have this done every six months for damage to my pudendal nerve- I was nervous first time but it is brill- I get sedated so not quite on the ball during the procedure, bit of a bruised feeling after but doesn't stop me doing anything apart from driving that day because of the sedation. Good luck, am sure you will love results!

candytuft63 · 12/06/2012 18:03

lola - the 25th of June at Wharfedale hospital. I will let you know how I get on.
IWish - so can I ask to be sedated ? or does there have to be another reason apart from general cowardliness ?

I work with a consultant who does these injections. Am off work for 2 weeks but if you want me to ask him anything when I go back please PM me. I know they use local anaesthetic in my hospital.

candytuft63 · 12/06/2012 18:17

Thankyou, Mrs I will. In my letter it says a local anaesthetic is given to numb the skin surface.

OP posts:
Krumbum · 12/06/2012 18:55

I've had a lumbar puncture, which is similar and it was not as bad as I thought it would be. They numb the area and obviously you can't look which helps. Def have someone there to talk to you and hold your hand if you can as it takes your mind off it. The end result will be worth it! And have a nice treat after :) xx

Flossyfloof · 12/06/2012 18:57

So it is a series of locals then the injection into the spine? How long does the relief last for? Sounds nasty but worth it.

candytuft63 · 02/07/2012 13:45

Just to update, I have to have the injection under a general anaesthetic, now because the pressure on my thigh (where the nerve damage is) is too much for me to bear. I fainted when I laid on the table.
The area on my back where the local was injected was fine, but I couldnt lay down properly and it wasnt safe to do.
Other people there didnt have any problems.
Sad

candy, good luck with the general, at least you won't know anything about it. When are you having this done?

candytuft63 · 02/07/2012 14:19

Thankyou, Rain. I am waiting to hear.
