I am a bit surprised that the headteacher of the primary school put herself up for election for Chairperson of the PTA and is now the chair...I would have thought that she would be too busy for that ...Or am I being unreasonable ????

I suppose it depends on how big her management team are and how big the school is?

TheOneWithTheHair · 12/06/2012 11:30

I have heard of this happening when no one else will step up and do it. I don't think it's that unusual tbh.

MerylStrop · 12/06/2012 11:31

yanbu
she SHOULD be too busy
and power relationship is all wrong
depends though if PTA has previously been total shambles/vipers nest

slartybartfast · 12/06/2012 11:32

i dont think it should be ht. did no one else want the job?

Itsjustafleshwound · 12/06/2012 11:34

Did anyone else put themselves forward to take on the job?

My only concern would be to ensure that the funds raised would be going towards things that the parents wished to support rather than just being channelled into things the school budget can't support iyswim.

GooseyLoosey · 12/06/2012 11:34

Unless there was no one else, should not be the head. Potential for conflict of interest I think.

grendel · 12/06/2012 11:36

I don't think it should be the HT. Can easily lead to the head thinking of PTA funds as an extra pot of funds for the school which he/she can dip into as necessary. Much better if chair is a parent as the PTA can often have rather different priorities on what they want to spend the money on (eg extra equipment and luxuries for the school, rather than just contributing to ongoing running costs).
Also, as mentioned above, I can't imagine how any HT would have the time to be an effective chair.

MsPeaches · 12/06/2012 11:37

The PTA in the past were not very strong ..just findind their feet and beginning to get organised ,very enthuastic small parent group beginning to make some money...parent willing to carry on being Chair ,when bang at AGM ,head nomonates self, seconded by schoolstaff .

The HT at my sons school wont be on the PTA - there is a teachers rep of course, but the HT sees this as being somehting to bring news insights and new ideas to the school which can be invaluable.
Being the chair can be a very time consuming post (i know on ours it certainly is) so i would have thought a HT would not have the time, but if no one else came forward...........? Were there other interested people? She must have had at least one recommendation and second in the voting to be appointed?

WorraLiberty · 12/06/2012 11:40

So the Head was seconded by the staff but what about the parents?

Didn't anyone else turn up to vote? Confused

WorraLiberty · 12/06/2012 11:41

And if the parent was willing to carry on being chair, it would seem no-one else at that meeting was happy with that.

So perhaps the Head felt she had to take the role?

MsPeaches · 12/06/2012 11:58

I think the parents were all a bit in awe of what was happening and maybe were given information at the secret vote of how they should vote ....I just don't understand it ...

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 12/06/2012 12:00

So you weren't there yourself to vote?
