To get annoyed when people in 4x4s drive around puddles?

I do a lot of country lane driving. I'm utterly fed up of having to pull my poor battered 10yo Citroen up onto steep muddy grass verges so that people in shiny 4x4s can not get their wheels wet?
And no, I'm not anti 4x4, I used to own one.

Why can't they get their wheels wet?

pictish · 11/06/2012 22:41

Really?
How mad!

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 11/06/2012 22:44

Worra, I have no idea! But seriously, it's a regular occurrence! I have to pull over so that the oncoming vehicle can drive around a puddle! Im not so worried when it's another car, but FGS isn't that what 4x4s are for?

I drove around a few puddles today, but it was because I didn't want to splash pedestrians. Maybe it's because the 4x4 owners know they make bigger splashes...?

squeakytoy · 11/06/2012 22:46

well you cant tell if there is a massive pothole below the puddle, so driving into one can be dangerous..

TodaysAGoodDay · 11/06/2012 22:46

And did you know... you can get your 4x4 professionally mud-sprayed to make it look like you've been off-roading? Ridiculous!

pictish · 11/06/2012 22:46

Dh drives through the puddles to give the kids a thrill. Grin

WorraLiberty · 11/06/2012 22:46

I don't know anything about cars but that's just weird Grin

Surely the fact it's raining would mean their wheels are already wet?

vj32 · 11/06/2012 22:47

I just get mad with people who drive 4x4s. There are loads of the really big new shiny 4x4 family tank things around here. No need for them. The real farmers stick out a mile because their 4x4s are much less pretentious and are always very muddy!

oshuk · 11/06/2012 22:48

We dodge puddles due to the poor state of the roads in our rural idyll. We don't make other drivers make space for us to do it though.

Eve · 11/06/2012 22:51

Best thing about 4x4 is driving through the puddles!

Not so good when you forget to have wipers on and then can't see out of the window.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 11/06/2012 22:52

Well obviously their wheels are already wet! Grin but I suppose if they drove through the puddles the rest of the vehicle might get wet or muddy too!
I think that it's a fairly sure thing that a six foot wide puddle doesn't have a six foot wide pot hole underneath though! And there aren't usually many pedestrians, there aren't any pavements!
It just bothers me that my wee banger is apparently less important than the 4x4, so I can pull up the bank/drive through the mud/get wet!

One of the best things about having a 4x4 is driving through the puddles! There must just be a lot of odd 4x4 drivers near you.

WorraLiberty · 11/06/2012 23:00

Ahh good point. I did say I don't know much about cars Blush

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 11/06/2012 23:02

I loved puddle jumping in mine! The water would hurl itself right up over the windscreen. And for a split second, you would be completely blind! Grin there was a great lane near my house, where not many people go, with HUGE puddles!

OP posts:
TheHappyHissy · 11/06/2012 23:16

You are aware that it can cause you to lose control if the puddle's too deep?

Or that water affects the ability to brake?

Or that grit can get into the brakes and scratch the discs?

Just because a car is big doesn't necessarily mean that the driver should, or according to you OP has to put themselves into a puddle so that you can pass unimpeded.

How about the idea that YOU brake to provide a space for an oncoming vehicle to avoid unnecessary danger?

This smacks of small dog syndrome, yap, yap yap

This smacks of small dog syndrome, yap yap yap Grin

I don't agree but it made me snort.

Babylon1 · 11/06/2012 23:22

For a lot of 4x4 owners, the most off-roading they ever do is when they clip a kerb!

Certainly true of me and my freelander until I got rid of it for something more appropriate! Wink

oshuk · 11/06/2012 23:27

We wouldn't dream of off-roading in ours. Only got it due to dp's obsession with landy's and the fact that we can get cut off in snow so need something that can get through. I hate it though.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 11/06/2012 23:29

Actually, I have a big car. C5. I used to own a 4x4. I'm fully aware of all of those facts. If you actually read my OP, I stated that I am the one who gives way. Nobody is likely to be going fast enough to lose control on our roads. My problem is that apparently, it's ok for my car to get muddy, scratched brakes, have to drive up the bank, risking ruined paintwork or flat tyres.

Sorry, last post was for THH.

People often do exactly the same to those in 4x4s. I've seen horrendous aggression by non-4x4's. There's just no need.

Just because a car can drive on a verge doesn't mean they have to be forced to do so.

Road courtesy costs nowt. But then again, seems like everyone's aggressive behind the wheel these days. It'd be laughable if not so pathetic.

MrsAmaretto · 11/06/2012 23:43

Yanbu, same on the single track roads where I live, if you have a vehicle designed to go off road it's only polite to be the vehicle who goes up on the verge!!

oshuk · 11/06/2012 23:44

I can't count how many times our wing mirrors have been smashed off due to other car drivers expecting us to move out of the way. Not cheap either.

Rindercella · 11/06/2012 23:47

Saggy, I was just thinking the same today. I drive a big 4x4 and live in an area where there's loads about. I love driving through big puddles in mine!

The only time I saw a fellow 4x4 driver actually drive through a puddle today was when I was behind one of the mothers from school in the local town, and she drove through a puddle, splashing an elderly man who was walking along on the pavement. He did not look very happy, poor man. I have been debating whether or not to say anything to her, but feel a bit chicken Blush
