To think that I should be able to get a stairgate

That fits on my fucking front room door!!

I have one from my older DC's that fits, but it is essential that I have one on DS3's bedroom door, because of the stairs.

So far, I have bought the same Lindam safe fit gate, but in the intervening few years since I bought my old one, they have changed them - they used to go from 75-85cm doorways, now they only go from 75-81cm. My doorways are 84cm.

So I took that one back to Tesco, and exchanged it for a Lindam extending metal stairgate, which is meant to fit doorways up to 107cm. Oh, yes, it fits, but it is impossible to open due to the design of my chuffing doorframes. I can just about manage it, but 8yo DS2 has muscle problems, and while he can do a normal pressure fit stairgate that no longer fit my bloody doors as Lindam have changed the size, he can't do this one, and is getting stressed and having a meltdown (he has ASD) about not being able to get in and out of the front room.

SO, I ordered a BabyDan travel stairgate that is meant to fit openings up to 91cm. And it doesn't work as my door is fitted on the wrong side of the door frame (to the point where it doesn't open properly, but it's Social Housing, HA won't change it, have told me to put up with it, and it doesn't matter if the door opens and closes properly (it doesn't close either, but I'm not allowed to plane any wood off it, the HA have said...).

So this one doesn't fucking work either. That's 3 stairgates, and not one of them is fucking suitable.

Why the FUCKITYFUCKITYFUCK do they have to change something that worked perfectly well? A 5yr old Lindam Safefit stairgate fits my arse about face back to front doors, so why the CHUFFING CHUFF doesn't the 'new' not so fucking 'improved' version?!!!

I am just about ready to duck tape 16mo DS3's feet to the front room floor and give up on stairgates entirely.

Does anyone know of a sub £30 pressure fit stairgate that will fit an 84cm door frame? (not the BabyDan travel one, as have tried that one)

I am ready to sit and wobble in a corner. I don't have more of a budget than that, I have already lost £20 on the metal extending one, as Tesco's won't exchange or refund as it's been fitted, and Argos have said that even if I return the BabyDan one tomorrow, it could be 10 working days before I get a refund into my bank.

Aaaaaaaarrrrrrrgggghhhhhhh!!!! N

I got some gates for our very awkward doorways from Baby Security they have a lot more options than Argos etc.

Still ending up with sections of architrave cut out and batons in ugly places though. Bastard old house with badly placed banisters.

Can you do a local eBay search and ask people to measure the gate (or whichever part of the gate Lindam have changed to make it narrower)?

CouthyMow · 11/06/2012 23:32

Ahahaha, there's one one there that looks possible, it's a black BabyDan that costs £37, but comes with two free extensions... would be a bit tight cost wise, but just about possible. Am off to browse done more, hadn't heard of some of the brands on there!

Need to keep him IN the front room, so he can't get in A) my downstairs loo with it's crappy folding door. B) out of the kitchen, and C) off the stairs.

CouthyMow · 11/06/2012 23:34

The bit they have changed is the bits on the side, there is one less 'bar' on each side if the opening but IYSWIM.

CouthyMow · 11/06/2012 23:36

And it's not just the size if the gate that has changed, MoodyKat, they have also shortened the bolts too. Ggggrrrrrrr.

Can't put a lock on the outside if the kitchen door, I couldn't lock myself in while cooking! I can't leave DC's out of earshot either due to their SN's, so have to keep the kitchen door open.

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 11/06/2012 23:47

fiRst... Grin
pressure gate

bloody keyboard

CouthyMow · 11/06/2012 23:49

Grin at getting a stargate for my front room door. He wouldn't be getting into mischief if he went through one of those when he walked through the doorway!

Well, he might do, but it's not my responsibility if it's on another planet, is it?

OP posts:
CouthyMow · 11/06/2012 23:50

Thing is, affording the extensions, anything over £30 is going to be a stretch, and I don't have time to save up for it.

McHappyPants2012 · 11/06/2012 23:56

Argos number 375/5486 should fit

McHappyPants2012 · 11/06/2012 23:57

Also look for dog gates, really they ate the same as safet gates but alot higher

CouthyMow · 12/06/2012 00:12

It doesn't fit, it's the one that is currently residing in my downstairs loo. It fits the width of the doorframe, but the design of the doorframe means it cannot be easily opened.

ebay for one of the old ones that fits?

tried canvassing fb friends who might have one?

or the HA get a strongly worded letter about dodgy doors and dangers to children?
or is it possible you can move the original one upstairs at night and downtstairs by day?

jojane · 12/06/2012 08:04

Ikea stairgate - our stairs seem to be too wide for normal stairways but uneasy gate comes with little extension piece so fits. Was about £15 if I recall a couple of years ago so should sti be way under £30. Might do home delivery if you're. Not near one or lik for any Ikea one on ebay

jojane · 12/06/2012 08:05

You can get fabric roll out ones too by would need to be screwed to frame (just fill in holes and paint over when you move out

glenthebattleostrich · 12/06/2012 08:24

i've got extensions for my lindham gates that I was just about to ebay. If you want to PM me I'll send you the details.

golemmings · 12/06/2012 08:32

How about a play own instead? We picked up 2 on ebay for about 20 each. Marvellous things. Still use it for locking dd (2.9) in when she's being a pain and I need to calm down before dealing with her!

PurplePidjin · 12/06/2012 08:47

If it's just the door opening the wrong way in your living room and obstructing the gate (not sure I'm reading right?) unscrew the hinges and take the door off.

Store it somewhere dry until you no longer need the gate, then reuse the screws and holes to rehang it before you move out.

Unless older ds would be freaked by a doorway with no door Wink

sheepsgomeeping · 12/06/2012 09:54

We had to screw a baton of wood to the door frame too.

Safety gates quality are rubbish there days not to mention flimsy.

crazykat · 12/06/2012 11:02

We've got a lindam gate and IIRC you could get one extension bit free (if you've still got the paperwork that was in the box) and i think it was about £7 for a second one about two years ago but it shouldn'e be much more expensive than that now.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 12/06/2012 11:08

Couthy - what about the Kiddiguard one that's like a roller blind? Ours stands up to 4yo DS hurling himself at it and he still can't climb it Grin
