Horrid Henry at school but banned at home

Chippychop · 11/06/2012 17:43

I've banned hh at home because I can see it changes ds 6 behaviour even dd 2 starts blowing raspberries. Just found out they watch it at school during wet play. Do you think it is suitable or am Aibu?

I loathe Horrid Henry with a passion, but I was raised on Enid Blyton so I guess that's to be expected. I refused to read them to my mindees and got them started on 'The Naughtiest Girl' series instead, which they loved. Also, the Mr Gum books are knickers-wettingly funny and far more clever.

Charliefarlie1192 · 11/06/2012 19:49

nailak can I ask why you dont listen to music at home?

Aboutlastnight · 11/06/2012 19:52

Enid Blyton' is utter trash from a literary point of view-it's formulaic, rife with stereotypes, cardboard characters etc etc

But i loved them.
Children's literature does not have to be well written to be enjoyable, it does not have to be worthy and full of 'good role models' to give pleasure. There are fabulous children's books-Philip Pullman comes to mind- but not all books have to be improving, mostly they are just a pleasant way of passing the time.

nailak · 11/06/2012 20:07

charlie I am not that strict and have music in background on tv, kids channels etc, but according to mainstream Islam musical instruments apart from drum are not allowed.

nailak · 11/06/2012 20:07

so i dont listen to pop music, mtv, music shows etc.

motherinferior · 11/06/2012 20:16

Nailak, that's surely not true? What about all the musicians like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan? What about ghazal traditions? They're all accompanied by instruments.

For those who are saying they can't understand why you'd ban it:

30 years ago (all but) my db got a book out from the library called something like "Book of naughty children". He found it very funny. So funny he started imitating some of them. There was one who gave silly, totally irrelevant answers "what are you doing in the toilet?" "I'm boiling an egg."

And one who if he didn't like the questions would pretend he'd heard a rhyming question. "Look at the billy goat." "I can't see a silly boat".

Funny in the book. Poentially very rude and definitely irritating in real life.

There were others, but I can't remember them.

My db thought it was very funny to do these two. So much so, he did them, and did them. And my dp went from "ignore the silly phase" to desperately trying to stop it, and failing.

I doubt he can remember reading the book. But he still does them, particularly the second. It's actually become a habit he can't stop.

Personally I can't stand HH. He either is treated really badly by his parents, or he gets what he wants through being bad, neither of which I think is healthy for a child to read about. However I haven't banned them, but treat them with indifference, so the dc really aren't bothered by them. Never seen the TV show though.

Chippychop · 11/06/2012 20:23

Ds did kick off a bit tonight - all shouty as par for the course after "watching" hh. But tbh it could very reasonably be because he is tired after first day back. Anyway he then became pp! I don't mind hh I think it's quite funny but then I'm a grown up and not testing the boundaries of my parents.... I'm not averse to him reading hh actually, anything to encourage reading is good. I think there is a world of difference between the books and the tv programme though and no I don't agree with watching tv on the first day bac

I would be more annoyed about them watching TV at school rather than what they were watching. Surely they have better things to do at wet play/after school care than watch TV. Very lazy IMO!

skybluepearl · 11/06/2012 20:27

We have banned Tracy backer for the same reason. My lovely child would suddenly act like a moody teenager after watching an episode!

Anyway there is so much great stuff to read and watch, so avoiding one thing isn't an issue

sarahseashell · 11/06/2012 20:29

YABU - horrid henry is great (books, not tv show)

nailak · 11/06/2012 20:31

motherinferior

there are differences of opinion in every religion Smile As far as I am aware the majority of sunni scholars agree instruments are haram based on authentic hadiths saying so.

there are many non instrumental islamic songs etc as well.

TheFallenMadonna · 11/06/2012 20:32

My DD loves Horrid Henry. We all love Just William.

In fact, literature is full of naughty children. Children's literature. You are going to be banning a lot of stuff if you think it is that that makes your DS act up.

WorraLiberty · 11/06/2012 20:33

He's old enough to know you're going to punish him if he copies HH

Just the same as if he were to copy other kids at school and you didn't like that sort of behaviour either.

IneedAbetterNicknameIn2012 · 11/06/2012 21:13

We love Horrid Henry in our house! As others have said, we discuss who is worse/more annoying HH or PP, and have talked about how we need to be a mix of the 2.

DS2 also learned Frere Jaques from watching it, he was just 3, maybe slightly under. Like a pp said, any show that teaches French to such young children is a bonus :o

Rollmops · 11/06/2012 23:00

Very, very badly written to start with, complete waste of trees. Should be banned and burned.
Naturally, one wouldn't want to say what one really thinks of HH as that might upset the author.

snowybun · 11/06/2012 23:47

My Ds 7 has asd I let him watch HH although he does mimic some things but it gives me a chance to talk to him about accepted behaviours. If I banned HH on the logic he copies certain things I would also have to ban finding nemo as he started saying blah, blah, blah after watching it but I talked to him and school backed up the message that it is rude to say it. I see it as a very visual way of teaching him what is acceptable and what is not.

mumeeee · 12/06/2012 09:56

YABU DD2 now 20 used to love them when she was a child. It didn't seem to effacer her behaviour and got her into reading.

Chippychop · 12/06/2012 16:05

And that's YOUR Choice not mine. Children are influenced by differing things. As a responsible parent I have to make the choices for my dc at this young age. Banning 1 thing for a while does no automatically mean a blanket ban for everything. My op was aimed at the school allowing the d to watch tv on day 1

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 12/06/2012 16:09

Personally I love DS reading so I wouldnt dictate to him what he can and cant read (within reason) as I dont want to kill his love for it.

I would personally be teaching my DS to NOT copy how characters in books behave rather than banning him from them - not a good lesson in life really.

Charliefarlie1192 · 12/06/2012 16:40

nailak oh I see, sorry I have never heard of that before, thanks for replying :)

Chippychop · 12/06/2012 16:45

[betty] we are not talking about Reading but tv watching. Can I take it you'd allow your dc to read anything... Then explain afterwards? Watch out world!

OP posts:
BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 12/06/2012 16:46

No, I said within reason if you look. Obviously age applicable...sorry, didnt think had to explain that Hmm

Have you been watching too much HH too?

Chippychop · 12/06/2012 16:52

Now now no need to be rude. Love PP

OP posts:
Fecklessdizzy · 12/06/2012 16:56

Can't stand HH and the DP loathes him with a passion ... DSs both loved him to bits and read the stories over and over, then grew out of them and moved on to Mr. Gum and Hiccup The Viking.

I think telling the difference between fiction and real life is a handy skill so I tend not to ban anything that's more or less age appropriate and it hasn't come back to bite me yet Smile

Although when DS2 was mashing something in Minecraft and I ventured a that's-not-very-nice-is-it sort of comment he pointed out that I loved Game Of Thrones and that wasn't very nice either ( I don't let him watch that, before you all jump on me, he woke up to go to the loo and stuck his head round the door in the dead of night! )
