DP building wrong!

Mother2many · 11/06/2012 16:15

My DP is moving our stand up w/d into our bathroom. (to get stupid thing out of kitchen!) It will be a tight squeeze..... I noticed 2 wks ago, the emergency shut off valves for the w/d are going to be directly behind the w/d!!!!! I commented on it...he was mad.

SOO, this weekend he's working on it again...but still doesn't change the emergency valves..

I said, if there is an emergency there is NO WAY I can get to the emergency valves to shut the water off!!!! DUH!!!!!! There will be zero space between w/d and walls. As is... I am sure the toilet will have to come out to put the w/d in!!! Angry

Yep...he's really mad now.... So, I said, fine...leave it...but if it floods, there is nothing I can do......and he is away with work from Monday - Fri.

I really don't think I am being unreasonable...like seriously.... Angry

'engineer' a flood.... So you are proved right!

SCOTCHandWRY · 11/06/2012 16:32

Ok, probably washer/dryer....

Is the emergency valve for the whole bathroom (ie already there)?

Why can't the valve sit at floor level beside, rather than behind, the washer/dryer?

If the valve HAS to sit behind the machine, can't you slide it across the floor a bit an access the valve?

Washing machines are VERY heavy but I'm sure with the help of a couple of other people it could be levered over the toilet...... but why? Wouldn't it be better in the kitchen?

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 11/06/2012 16:32

"solid stand up one" - as opposed to what exactly?

SCOTCHandWRY · 11/06/2012 16:35

What do you mean by solid stand up one? Is it much taller than a normal one, so won't fit under the kitchen work top?

Pandemoniaa · 11/06/2012 16:40

Are there "sit down" versions of this useful appliance?

takingiteasy · 11/06/2012 16:48

A floppy lie down one!

Pendeen · 11/06/2012 16:56

Just don't mention 'Part P' to your 'DP'...

:o

Jux · 11/06/2012 17:03

You do know that to put a w/d into a bathroom is completely against building regs unless it is completely boxed off - with doors and the electrics hidden well away from water in the boxoed off bit with doors shut, so you won't be able to reach the socket either?

I know this because I wanted to put mine in the bathroom too, and no plumber/electrician would touch it. All told me the above.

CountryMouse27 · 11/06/2012 17:08

Hang on, if these emergency taps are behind the w/d then surely they'd be there whether it is in the kitchen, bathroom, garage etc?

Where do you want him to put it if you dont want it in the Kitchen and you can't fit it in the bathroom?

RandomNumbers · 11/06/2012 17:12

what Jux said

tyler80 · 11/06/2012 17:13

Jux Rules about wiring in bathrooms have been relaxed fairly recently so it is possible to have a washing machine in your bathroom and meet building regs in some cases.

RandomNumbers · 11/06/2012 17:14

so so dangerous; keep it in the kitchen, at least you won't be electrocuted in your bath

LuvileeJubilee · 11/06/2012 17:18

I have the MN fridge, thing of beauty that it is, it is huge and blocks my gas supply, electric meter and water Grin

Tis worth it to have chilled water and crushed ice on tap tho.

Jux · 11/06/2012 17:20

Tyler!!!! Really?!!!!! I could have my w/d in the bathroom?!!!!!!

OldGreyWiffleTest · 11/06/2012 17:21

It is MADNESS to put such an electrical item into a bathroom!

tyler80 · 11/06/2012 17:22

It depends, there are quite strict rules about it and it's not always possible depending on the size of your bathroom.

Magneto · 11/06/2012 17:27

How big are your bathrooms? Envy I can barely fit me and ds in there at the same time never mind an appliance!

Still wouldn't put one in there though for fear of being electrocuted.

Jux · 11/06/2012 18:43

My bathroom's effing enormous Grin

I don't actually have a w/d, I have a washing m/c and a dryer, and there's room for both of them, side by side.

Blush just showing off now, sorry Blush

Mother2many · 12/06/2012 19:32

You can buy apartment size washer and a separate dryer. Mine is joined in the middle. SOO, with just having my kids at home, there is NO way I could pull it away from the wall to shut off the valves.

We have to raise them about a foot, so I suggested putting the valves under it, so I just have to open a door, reach in and shut it off...

Sure Jux...your bathroom is prob. the size of my bedroom! LOLOLOL

Anyhow... There is literally no other place for it. My kitchen is super small too... Wish I could post a pic..then you'd all laugh... lol
