Yep, poncey wankers.

I've just planted a hundred lavender outside my little town centre cottage (130 years old) and I've ordered a sign called "lavender cottage".

I'm a literal poncey wanker me Grin

nickelbarapasaurus · 11/06/2012 15:31

name only is fine.

it's also okay to have both if it was a name first, then lots of houses were built around it and it became a number too.

not okay to give a numbered house a name.

i used to live in a bothy.
it was called "the Bothy"

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 11/06/2012 15:32

Our old flat had a flat name, a house name, a house number AND a road name so it was definitely overkill:

The Hearts Family
5 The Willows
38 Park Drive
City name
Postcode

I used to just put Flat 5, 38 Heath Drive. Annoyed some of the poncey neighbours in the other 6 flats no end!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 11/06/2012 15:33

oops might have outed myself a bit there.

Frontpaw · 11/06/2012 15:38

Get them to delete it! there are some weirdos on cyber land!

MaryPoppinsBag · 11/06/2012 15:41

I'd love a house with a name, but live in a 1950's ex council semi - so it just wouldn't be right!

We went on holiday to Malta and all the houses have names, apparently it is tradition to name your house when you move in. (we have Maltese friends who were just doing up their property before they married and were looking forward to naming it).

TheVermiciousKnid · 11/06/2012 15:43

Knid, I think you're okay. After all, I am sure Blenheim Palace is not Blenheim Palace, 1 Oxford Road, Woodstock.

How did you guess that I live at Blenheim Palace!

SoupDragon · 11/06/2012 15:46

My house is called Decleigh according to the plaque on the wall. In awful medieval lettering. I can't get the bloody thing off as the screws have rusted.

IShallWearMidnight · 11/06/2012 15:47

went to school with a girl who was very posh - she lived at 'village name' Hall, village. That's the kind of address I want Wink

eatyourveg · 11/06/2012 15:49

we used to live at

The Last House
x x x Rd

Sometimes put the number in sometimes didn't - sometimes put the name in sometimes didn't.

Pendeen · 11/06/2012 15:59

As you asked...

  1. Badges. Buying an Aud instead of a Skoda "because of the quality" even though they are both VWs under the skin.
  1. Labels. Striving to always display every label if it's at all fashionable (or rare).
  1. TV. Buying the very best television and then teling everyone that it's "for the documentaries - the childres just adore them.
  1. Culture. Never admtting to having heard of a modern pop group but perversely offering sage opinions on the latest play / book / exihibition.
  1. Educaton. Fitting a classical reference or quotaton into every conversation - however irrelevant.
  1. Servants. Posessing an army of "little men" who are just wonderful at dealing with the sink / washing machine / garden / vibrator.
  1. Lady of the Manor. Bestowing a tacky and 'humorous' name to your little semi.

:)

TroublesomeEx · 11/06/2012 15:59

I used to live in a house named after the hamlet I lived in. So it was 'Hamlet House'. Sounded very grand but it wasn't really!

FiftyShadesofViper · 11/06/2012 15:59

Our house has had several names in its lifetime so far.

When it was built it was called after a place in another country, no idea why or when that name lapsed.

When we bought it the previous people told us that it had no name when they moved in so they gave it one (incredibly generic and boring imo but it's on the gatepost so we leave it) yet when we give our house no and postcode on phone we often get asked "is it x?" which is a totally different name (that one sounds like a medical condition)

We just use the number and street name.

EmmaNemms · 11/06/2012 16:10

Ours is 'house name, village'. Hardly any of the houses in our village have a street name, let alone house number. Our house is newish but on the site of an older house, so the name was kept. Disappointingly, no one has ever asked me for a street name, so I can say, 'but we don't have one... I did want to change it when I moved it but now quite like it. We have a view over a meadow... I do wish our village name was a bit more mad. I love one near us called Gussage All Saints.

RoxyRobin · 11/06/2012 16:12

When we moved in our house had a plate screwed to the wall announcing it to be 'Glamis' Grin.

The previous owners should have been done under trades description when they marketed it. Not a drawbridge or crenellation in sight. What's more, it's opposite a very grand house which only has a number, so we removed the plate pdq before our friends could laugh at it.

Knew a couple called Norma and Ivan who named their house 'Norvan' (tee hee).

Bearhugs43 · 11/06/2012 16:15

A certain generation in our area loved to name their (already numbered) houses.. By combining the couples names...

V v classy!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 11/06/2012 16:17

Yes Frontpaw there are, aren't there. It's only part of our old street name from about 7 years ago though, so not too worried Confused Smile

Pendeen. Thank you. Relieved I am not pretentious Grin

noddyholder · 11/06/2012 16:47

We moved into a house years ago and the one opposite had a number just a normal house but also had name THISLEDO!!!!! My dp started to make plans to move as soon as he saw it Grin

redrubyshoes · 11/06/2012 16:53

A house near me is called Dim View.

bluerodeo · 11/06/2012 16:59

we are moving soon and all houses on our new street have house names only, no numbers. I am Shock and a little Blush as it's not me at all. will cost to have it changed, as it's registered with council with name only.

JamieOliveOil · 11/06/2012 17:00

The house next door to me is called Dallas!

Rabid · 11/06/2012 17:04

Afaik it's hard for online ordering if you have no number

OP posts:
Peppin · 11/06/2012 17:07

YANBU. In my road (in which the housing stock is all smallish terraced 1950s houses), there are several houses with names (not mine of course!). There is a "Dunroamin", as well as a "OorHoose". Cringe.

bijou3 · 11/06/2012 17:12

I would do what I want and not worry about what other people think.

SoupDragon · 11/06/2012 17:22

I wonder if I can rename mine WasHis... [ponders]
