The weather.... summer just isn't happening.

It's reached 10 degrees here (east coast, Scotland) today, at 2pm on a June day, got my heating switched on for the 3 day in a row Sad. Yet a few weeks ago Scotland recorded it's highest ever spring temps (and broke the record 3 days in a row!).

Apologies for the daily fail link, but I find it somewhat concerning that NOAA is reporting that the past 6 months are the hottest Jan-June they've recorded for the USA, with early tropical storm/hurricane activity this year (these storm systems drive much of OUR weather).......... and at the same time, we have a non-summer as the jet-stream is jammed in the "wrong" place, preventing our usual weather patterns.... more high impact/low frequency weather events happening all over the place.... temp records being broken all over the place....

AIBU to actually be getting a bit worried that we are on the edge of some nasty climate CHANGE that's going to flip us (the UK) into a different kind of climate permanently?

Regardless of cause (both man-made and natural IMO), it's all gone a bit WEIRD. I'm worried about what this means for food production/water supplies first and foremost - but also the less important things such as how a major change will affect things like our housing, our leisure time etc.

Sunscorch · 11/06/2012 14:46

Don't be silly. It's not we're not getting a Summer this year...

We've just already had it.

Pixieonthemoor · 11/06/2012 14:50

Aaarrrgh I have had hot water bottles in bed for the last couple of nights!! BUT - if this cheers you up - I have heard that May and June are due to be a total washout (as we have seen) but that July and August will be nice. Fingers crossed - I would really like to stop wearing my thermals!!

AnyoneForTennis · 11/06/2012 14:51

What is 'nice' though?

SCOTCHandWRY · 11/06/2012 14:53

Sunscorch, I am concerned that the 3 glorious days we had a couple of weeks ago, was in fact, summer!

Pixie, hope so!

Anyone, nice would be 15-25deg, sunny, plenty of rain but only at night (keep things growing), a light breeze..... nothing to extreme

I know Zukiecat, it's been very strange! I'm probably a little further to the south from you...... was just on the edge of the snow (had 1 heavy shower) after the mini heat wave......... if your in/near Aberdeen (I used to live there), have you noticed how much more snow the city gets now, year in year out (inland, they used to get it, but not so much along the coastline)....... much more than 20years ago!

In the Midlands....nursing my chilblains (in June WTF!)

GiserableMitt · 11/06/2012 16:04

I live in the Middle East and although we don't see too many rainy days we do get rain. Years ago we would get blasts of a few days of torrential rain here and there in December/January/early February and a token thunderstorm in April causing complete and utter fucking chaos but the pst few years we've had maybe two days with a few spots of rain and one or two nights with proper rain. It seems the weather is screwed everywhere.

gamerwidow · 11/06/2012 16:08

The weather for June this year has been rubbish but it's hardly unprecedented to get a washed out summer in the UK.
I think it's a bit early to be considering a permanent change of climate on the basis of 6 months figures. If we're seeing weather like this consistently for the next 10-20 years then you can get worried.

Nancy66 · 11/06/2012 16:11

what happens if it's like this for the Olympics? Does the stadium have a roof or do they just rain, jump and throw stuff in the pissing rain? I suppose it will benefit our athletes.....

gwendolinefairfax · 11/06/2012 22:48

It has been crap so far, with just two or three days hot enough to get totally sunburnt then sleat, snow, hurricanes, torrential rain and then just rain...

I am a bit bored of the rain .On the other hand if you live in SE England you wil be able to wash your car , fill your pool , water the garden because no more drought !

You just need to wait for the rain to stop to do so , though....
