Moshi Monsters website - why so much???

I have two kids who have just got into the Moshi Monsters website (due to a homework project !!!). Anyway, they are loving it but keep coming up with things they can't do because they are not members. The cost of membership is almost £30 per year. That's £60 for me and I'm thinking I could buy a new microwave for that price!

Why is this kids website so expensive?

So as you can guess, we are not signing up but it has made me really mad.

Am I right in thinking its like Neopets was back in the day? I LOVE it. Used to spend hours on it

Id just get them a membership as a treat. If they're not good it gets cancel. Good for both sides!

Is there advertising in MM?(can't remember) Is that why you have to pay?

morethanpotatoprints · 10/06/2012 16:51

I just said no as I do to all peer pressure. If you don't like it stand your ground. If it was a school set homework, YANBU and I would have complained. I am not holier than thou but dd is alot younger than ds's and I learned long ago just say no.

AdventuresWithVoles · 10/06/2012 16:52

Moshi Monsters is on the wane, it's all Binweevils now, doncha know Wink.

I refused to pay up & DC have pursued other interests.

Rockpool · 10/06/2012 18:03

Yes I don't like the sad Moshi once you don't visit. Also one of Dtwin 2's friends is finding it impossible to get rid of the e-mails.

holidaywoe · 10/06/2012 18:14

Moshi's are still going strong in this house, Binweevils were pre moshi but didnt hold the same allure!!

TheMonster · 10/06/2012 19:13

My DS loved the DSi game and it seems that he can play it with less help than he needs with the PC/net version as less reading is needed.

OP, I spoke to DP and he said that you'd only need to pay once as then you can have multiple monsters to create so your DC can have one each under just the one log-in.

TheMonster · 10/06/2012 19:14

Rockpool, the emails for DS come to me, and I have only ever confirmation ones when we top up.

I bloody hate Moshi Monsters. The ex bought the kids a year long membership each as part of their christmas present.

I've only bought the trading cards (a box can be bought for next to nothing on amazon and a great bribery material) for them but in this house we have:

Moshi Nintendo DS case
Moshi Rucksack
Plastic Moshi Monsters (which hurt like a bitch when you tred on them)
Moshi Top Trumps Cards
Moshi Pencil Cases
Cuddly talking Diavlo
Cuddly talking Zommer
Large plastic Diavlo
Large plastic Zommer
Diavlo Keyring
Diavlo Nintendo DS Charm
and the obligatory Moshi Monsters trading folder.

I hate the things! The school has banned them so they can't even trade them any more so we literally have HUNDREDS of swaps sat here. If anyone needs any...

But yes the membership causes fights and ructions over computer time and drives me bonkers!

CanISawItOff · 10/06/2012 20:57

Argh and don't mention Bin Weevils. They've been banned in this house whilst moshi's are the 'in' thing.

Oh we also have a copy of the Moshi CD.

Did I mention how much I hate them?

Did I mention how much I hate the ex?

Did I mention how much I hate other parents who buy this shit for my kids?

AnnieLobeseder · 11/06/2012 15:00

Not sure why some are saying it's not educational. Kids learn some level of responsibility in looking after their pets, they have to earn money (rox) to buy food or seeds for moshlings, or house upgrades, and have to learn to budget the money they have. There are maths and word games, and puzzles that take some thinking to solve. I think it's well worth the money and DD is learning loads.

mop top tweeny bop, shimmying and shaking, i've lost count of the hearts that I've been breaking.........

this has been going round in my head for about a month

arrrrggggjjjjj

AnnieLobeseder · 11/06/2012 20:08

I can't see and my eyeballs they are aching cos my hair's too looooooong!

On the plus side, seeing DD2 headbang to Zommer makes it all worth it (aging metalhead).

MCos · 11/06/2012 23:12

My two joined just about 2 years ago. They were non-members for several months, and were allowed to become members that December (after months of begging), so long they paid for it out of their own money. They both love it and had no problem renewing their membership last December, again out of their own pocket money.

For DD1(10), it has sparked an interest in all things computer. OK, she is obsessed with Moshi Monster, but now she is now tinkering around with HTML, Powerpoint, Excel & Word too. (Facebook is off limits until she is at least 12). If you ask her what she'd like to do when she is older, the answers are often around positions she believes exist at Mind Candy. Either designing, coding or even marketing Moshis. Hopefully that will keep her working at her maths!

I actually don't mind all the moshi-monster tat that is available. At least most of it is really cheap, so they can buy it out of their own pocket money. And it makes for great bribes/treats/rewards without breaking the bank.

ln1981 · 11/06/2012 23:26

My 3dc's are into moshis-drives me insane!! The oldest two are both members but they pay for it themselves. Their granny also has a moshi on their which leads to many phonecalls between her and the kids looking for codes for flowers to catch the monsters Confused
And the songs- have that hairs too long one in my head, on a constant loop- argh!!

ln1981 · 11/06/2012 23:27

There not their

Dropdeadfred · 11/06/2012 23:42
