I had to turn the car round in a layby the other day when I was lost looking for the local Tesco whilst on holiday.

As I pulled in I passed a car that wasn't parked well and I noticed the driver moving frantically in the front. My position at first blocked any view of the passenger seat but as I pulled alongside I realised there was a passenger in that seat and then it suddenly hit me that the man had been assaulting her. He drove off pretty quick so I didn't get a good look. The passenger was female and she could have been an older girl.

I turned round and tried to follow but there was a lot of traffic and I lost him. I couldn't get hold of my mobile but I thought I'd try and memorise the reg no and phone the police when I could stop but I lost him.

I'm still shocked and I feel really bad that I didn't manage to do anything to help.

use google maps and street view to retrace your journey

I've reported it and there was another report at the time. The police went out to the area at the time but found nothing. They didn't give me many details about the other report as it could have been a different assault but it was also a man punching a woman.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I wouldn't have reported it because I have so few details but I think the woman could have been a minor and since it's back to school tomorrow injuries could be noticed. She could have been a very young looking woman though and not a child.

Well done, you absolutely did the right thing.

Well done for reporting it.

At least they have your details now if they ever do need to speak to you about it.

You can give them some description, time, place, colour of the car, descriptions of the man and woman, direction he drove off in etc. Anything is better than nothing and at least then you will know that you did what you could to help her.
