To expect parents/ carers to wipe their children's snotty noses?

I can't bear it. Snot everywhere, over toys, clothes, other children etc etc. Even worse when offered a tissue to get the response "It's fine thanks I've got some." Aaargh, bleeping well use them then!
Situation is then topped off with the accompanying grumbles about how colds are always passed around the family... Hmm can't think how that is happening!

Do you have children?

LST · 09/06/2012 13:54

YANBU. I hate snot!

Sirzy · 09/06/2012 13:55

I hate seeing it but unless you follow Ds around and wipe his nose every second at times then he will have a snotty nose!

Just5minspeace · 09/06/2012 13:58

I have 3 children- 6,4 & 2 and they can all wipe their own noses, even the littlest. I just don't see why snot should be treated differently to any other waste product!

I was like you until I had dd2, she's snotty. I used to wipe her nose all the time but it starts bleeding if you wipe too much :( even if you use baby wipes! So sometimes just leave it. I draw the line if its running down into her mouth or getting on toys but if it just crusts I leave it until I can do it with a warm damp flannel.

Ambrosius · 09/06/2012 14:02

Yanbu. Its disgusting.

nancy75 · 09/06/2012 14:03

Yanbu, I hate to see kids with snotty noses and grubby faces, and yes I do have children!

RandomMess · 09/06/2012 14:12

Can't abide it,and SNIFFING

My dc ended up learning how to blow their noses at early ages.

MrsRhettButler does your dd2 have clear mucus a lot of the time, if so it's probably rhinitus due to allergies and she could take antihistamines, a cracker sore nose is not fun Sad

Also put vaseline on everyday so it's the vaseline getting wiped an not the skin.

DowagersHump · 09/06/2012 14:13

I don't like it either but short of stuffing tissues up DS's nose at the moment (and believe me, I'm seriously considering it), he is vaguely snotty at all times

helenthemadex · 09/06/2012 14:14

snot is one of my pet hates make me want to puke, I know you cant follow kids around all the time but teach them to wipe their own noses as soon as possible and if you see you kid has a snotty nose wipe it!!

doggiemumma · 09/06/2012 14:17

The problem is, if you have a snotty nosed child they will be irritated by you keep wiping their nose and it may well get sore - so i can sort of understand why parents don't chase their children around with tissues. Ive been quite lucky with my two as their noses seem to keep their business to themselves, but i was a total snot fest and it just never stopped. Well, it has now, thankfully

YankNCock · 09/06/2012 14:18

Some kids seem to have more trouble with having snotty noses than others. I'm fairly lucky with DS, only gets bad when he's got a cold and he doesn't get them too often. There are other kids I know though, their mums wipe their noses and 5 seconds later it's streaming again. And they're like that even when not ill. Yeah, a bit grim, but I feel sorry for them more than being annoyed.

madmouse · 09/06/2012 14:24

MrsRhettbuttler even if you use babywipes - baby wipes are quite aggressive and will irritate the sensitive skin round the nose. Try balsam tissues, and vaseline

AnnaFender · 09/06/2012 14:26

My DD2 is like yours MrsRhettButler, she is snotty all the time and often her nose gets very sore and will sometimes bleed when wiped too much so I prefer to leave it until I can use a facecloth. She has started suffering with hay fever this year which is making it even worse, the anti histamines help every other symptom but the snotty nose Sad She is only 20 months so can't really do it herself and I hate to see in so much distress from having her nose wiped!

Kveta · 09/06/2012 14:27

I really hate seeing snot candles on upper lips of toddlers - I'm so lucky so far that DS hates having a snotty nose, and so wipes it himself at the first dribble.

Sadly he often does a sleeve length wipe, so ends up with long snots on his arms, but his best friend has the constant green slugs trailing down his face, and it makes me recoil.

MrsRhettButler · 09/06/2012 14:28

Yes Random, mostly clear, she's only 9mo though not sure if she's too young? I'll look into it though thanks :)

Thanks madmouse, I do put vaseline on regularly but maybe need to splash out on super soft tissues!

RandomMess · 09/06/2012 14:31

MrsRhett - could be to house dust mites or anything Sad

No signs of asthma I hope?

HeadfirstForHalos · 09/06/2012 14:42

While walking to school the other week my ds2 (4) went to wipe his nose on his sleeve until I said "No! You do not wipe your nose on your sleeve!". As I was fishing a tissue out of my pocket with my other hand (we were holding hands) he swiftly wiped his nose on MY sleeve instead. It was a proper slug trail. I wish I'd left him to it now Grin

Just5minspeace · 09/06/2012 14:49

Halos - a classic move!

Wipe their noses? Why? The kids have got long sleeves haven't they?

ComposHat · 09/06/2012 15:22
