have you kept your fluids up?

my2centsis · 09/06/2012 07:00

If you feel like crap maybe he does too? Or maybe because you feel crap you are more sensitive to the crying?

Dprince · 09/06/2012 07:01

Your body will convert your fat stores. Not saying you are not fat but unless you are very underweight you will have some.

Nagoo · 09/06/2012 07:02

Is he weaned at all?

Nagoo · 09/06/2012 07:03

Dprince is right, your body will prioritise feeding the baby over keeping energy for yourself.

mumtoone123 · 09/06/2012 07:05

If you are dehydrated your milk supply will be a bit low. Try and drink fluids. You shouldn't lose your milk supply - but you can use a pump of you're worried.
Call nhs direct though. Hope you get better soon

my2centsis · 09/06/2012 07:05

Yea that's what I thought too, as 4to dd also is feeling sick.

However dh just fed him 75mls of expressed milk I had in the freezer (last one) and he scoffed it down.

Yes he has lunch and tea. It's 6pm here so he will have tea shortly

Have you got anyone (partner, family, friend?) who could look after the baby at all times except when you are feeding, so you can rest and recover?

Keep your fluids up, get some Diyoralite (sp?), as long as you keep putting your baby to the breast, your supply should be fine. Your baby may want to feed more often, but that will actually help your supply to catch up when you are better.

I had a really bad tummy bug when DS3 was 9/10 mo, but I bf him till he was over 12mo.

Just rest as much as you can, and when you are better, spend a day in bed (a late 'babymoon'), and letting your baby have free access to the breast, and your supply will be fine.

Don't worry too much, your baby will be fine, with or without a bottle of formula. And bf will give him some immunity to the tummy bug too.

I was sick like this when my baby was 12 weeks, he barely noticed! I got checked out and given antibiotics for a gastro bug then felt like a new person within 24hrs.

my2centsis · 09/06/2012 07:08

I have an amazing dh but he is very much a mummy's boy and doesnt let dh do much for him. Same as dd

Oh you poor thing. Big hugs. I think that at 6 months your supply sould be well enough established to weather a day or two of this. Get well soon:)

Thank you do much for your reassurance this is why I love mums net!

Get some diaoralyte - you need to replace the sugars and salts you ahev lost...drink a small glass over an hour - a straw is good for this.

Hope you feel better soon.

Knittingmamma · 09/06/2012 07:19

As long as you aren't sick for 30 mins after drinking, some of that fluid will be getting into your system. That's what nhs direct told me in similar situation. Keep drinking little sips. and let baby at the breast as often as he likes, don't worry about any kind of routine for a day or two. Hope you feel better soon.

GodisaDj · 09/06/2012 07:34

OP your supply won't be affected even if you are dehydrated (think of a poor country and lack of water supplies, breastfeeding saves children's lives). Obviously it'll make you feel better to drink fluids so definitely drink as much as you can.

I had s&d about 3 weeks ago. I believe it was the noro virus as I had it for 72 hours. Anything I drank/ate came straight out one way or the other (tmi) but I couldn't even keep water down and I'm breastfeeding dd who was 9 months at the time.

DD had been sick the day before, and had an 'off' day which i'd put down to teething. Seems as though she had the virus and passed it to me (and the dp) So she was cranky when I was but without the horrific symptoms (something I put down to breastmilk making the antebodies to fight the virus so they're never as ill)

All you can do is sleep, drink fluids and take paracetomol to ease fever if you have one (my temp reached 39.6 so was very feverish/not sleeping etc).

If you can get DP or family member round to help with DS, even take him out for the day (if milk is out of sight out of mind). If they take him out, offer him a water during the day and make sure meal times are little and often, up his dairy at meal times too (yoghurt, cheese) - its only temporary and will give you a little break. A friend of mine from the baby group I go to picked dd up and took her off me, initially for 2 hours but ended up having her for 6 hours and she was fine. Had lots of food at lunch time and then napped on my friends lap for an hour - she was my lifesaver as I really had no energy to look after dd, I felt completely hopeless!

6 month olds are very resilient at this age, they can cope without milk a bit longer if they have to. If you're like me, you've always been there to feed on demand so think they can't cope for longer than a couple of hours when in reality, they can go longer.

Hope you feel better soon Smile

stopthinkingsomuch · 09/06/2012 07:36

Your supply should be ok. I had tonsilectomy so was barely eating. I had a few days of no latching and crap time with pumping and all was ok. Unfortunately Ds was grumpy as he was low on milk. As soon as we started up again it was fine.

sashh · 09/06/2012 08:19

I'm not an expert in any way, but I saw some advice on another website when someone's supply had dried up, it was:

Go to bed with a flask of somethiing warm to drink and another of something cold.

I don't know if this works.

goodgriefpenfold · 09/06/2012 08:37

Try drinking some flat coke good to settle the stomach, take small sips to help it stay down.

Another thing that might help reduce nausea and vomiting is to boil a inch-long chunk of ginger and drink the water when it's cooled down. Hope you feel better soon.
