Not to tip spa/hairdresser?

becsparkel · 08/06/2012 22:01

Went to my local spa/salon the other day as a treat (have a 7.5 mo, so this has been a long time coming). Had a lovely relaxing massage & haircut, which was brilliant. The whole thing was pretty expensive and they charged me an extra £10 because I was having a restyle. I don't usually tip spa's as I think they already charge extortionate amounts anyway but I might have tipped the hairdresser if they hadn't charged me an extra tenner.

What's the etiquette and AIBU not to tip the spa therapist and/or hairdresser? The receptionist gave me a dirty look when she saw I hadn't added anything, which makes me wonder if people generally do tip.

Hit me with it!

Tip the hairdresser-always.

Elderflowergranita · 08/06/2012 22:03

I never tip the hairdresser.

Passmethecrisps · 08/06/2012 22:03

I really want to know the answer to this. When I get my hair done it costs about £100. I never tip but never know if I am supposed to. Being on the answers!

WorraLiberty · 08/06/2012 22:03

I have to say I doubt she gave you a dirty look, but perhaps you felt she did because you were feeling a bit unsure anyway?

I would have tipped the hairdresser because she probably pays and extortionate amount of rent to the Spa.

Extra money for re-styling is the norm around here.

wonkylegs · 08/06/2012 22:05

Never tip spa/ hairdresser and it never occurred for me to do so until I moved up here and we had a discussion about tipping at work.

Passmethecrisps · 08/06/2012 22:05

Bring I mean.

DH has suggested a largish tip at Christmas. He takes his hairdresser vegetables from the allotment but I am not sure how well that would go down in Toni & Guy

FiftyShadesofViper · 08/06/2012 22:06

Mine also costs about £100 so I don't tip normally just give a fairly generous one at Christmas.

FunnysInLaJardin · 08/06/2012 22:06

I never tip my hairdresser. They are usually self employed AFAIK. I do tip at a restaurant though, but that is the only place I do. Even though their employers should pay them a fair wage in the first place, and include their cost into the cost of my meal..........

NovackNGood · 08/06/2012 22:07

Never tip anyone unless it´s the odd spare change to get it out of the way in a charity jar at the till.

Passmethecrisps · 08/06/2012 22:09

Actually novack that is a good point. I pay for everything by card so never have change. If I did, maybe I wouldn't feel so awkward

Passmethecrisps · 08/06/2012 22:10

Although I always stick 12% on a bill for food. The etiquette there seems clearer for some reason.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 08/06/2012 22:11

I only ever tip my hairdresser at Christmas. Not sure if that's the done thing, but I'm happy with it!

Nanny0gg · 08/06/2012 22:13

A restyle always costs more than a normal cut - it's more work!
I would always tip, unless they're the owner of the salon. Even self-employed don't always end up with much after paying for chair rental, products and a percentage of the price.
And the person who washes your hair and brings you tea earns a pittance.
The beautician I go to is the owner, but does me loads of favours so I always buy her a really nice Christmas present.

EnjoyResponsibly · 08/06/2012 22:14

My dads favourite joke: Tipping is a place in China Hmm

Anyhoo, YABU not to tip the hairdresser, it's just one of life's many unbreakable rules.

Your barnet may take a pasting next time!

supadupapupascupa · 08/06/2012 22:14

i only tip in restaurants

smoggii · 08/06/2012 22:17

I tend to think of hairdressing as a skill you are paying therefore it is the product so you pay for it in the price and there is no additional service in the same way that you don't tip the chef at a restaurant.

If someone else does the wash/sweep up i will usually give them a couple of quid.

Restaurants are different you pay for the producty (food) and then if the waiter goes the extra mile then i will leave a tip for good service which is a bit of a bonus to the meal.

Not sure that makes sense but i know what i mean.

On the flipside DM always tips the hairdresser

FunnysInLaJardin · 08/06/2012 22:19

god, I hate tipping. Just charge the proper price FFS. It's all so awkward

NovackNGood · 08/06/2012 22:19

I find the whole tipping thing to be far too american and sadly becoming too expected in the UK these last years too with people usually paraphrasing the tipping scene in resevior dogs. Waiters are still paid minimum wage at least so why are they entitled to a cut of 12% of my meal costs just for bring me my plate and not spitting in the food?

Passmethecrisps · 08/06/2012 22:20

Right, I've decided. I'm going armed with broad beans next time

wigglesrock · 08/06/2012 22:21

I always tip my hairdresser and leave £1 or so for the member of staff who washes my hair.

SuzySheepSmellsNice · 08/06/2012 22:22

tipping is for 'above and beyond' service, not obligatory... what a crazy world we live in...

gwenniebee · 08/06/2012 22:24

I never tip the hairdresser - I pay by card and would feel ruder putting a couple of coppers in the box than I do just entering my pin and buggering off! Often at a restaurant there's a possibility of adding on when you put your pin in but I've never had this at the hairdresser.

Like the idea of taking broad beans, though.............

TheNightWatch · 08/06/2012 22:25

I went today as well. It was £47 with my usual hairdresser. What I really hate is when they come with you to the reception and just stand there or pretend to make conversation with you whilst you pay because you then feel like you have to give them the change. And they always charge a funny amount, dont they? so that the change is just enough for a tip?

I gave him the three quid but, I couldve done with it, Im broke and I need some false eyelashes for a party Im going to tomorrow night.

NarkedRaspberry · 08/06/2012 22:27

Seriously??? A tip is standard for certain services unless the service was truly awful. The better the service, the higher the tip.

itdoesnthurttohavemanners · 08/06/2012 22:33

I used to tip hairdressers religiously.....until one confessed to me just how much she makes through tips....don't believe the hype about poor hairdressers! A lot of them are on considerably more than your kid's teacher (and no one tips me for teaching your kids!!!)

My mum always tips the same girl a tenner everytime. I'd rather she sent the tenner my way ;)
