To have judged the chugger

The door went today and outside stood a fairly young (20's), fairly good looking lad (standard charity mugger material). He gave me a bit of cocky patter about the charity and I basically shut the door on him. I have 2 young kids, didn't want to be disturbed and only answerd the door because I was expecting a delivery.

I shut the door because I assumed that he was a paid up chugger (who I can't stand) and not a volunteer. If it had been a nice old dear I would have been alot more polite, even if I had decided not to make a donation.

But now I have got myself in a pickle thinking that maybe he is a volunteer, one whose beloved parent has suffered with the the disease the charity was collecting for and who gives up his free time to collect for them.

Please assuage my guilt and tell me he was a chugger and just wanted me to sign my money away with a direct debit!!!

Well, I guess you'll never know although in my experience he is likely to be a paid chugger.

Just say to them, as soon as you open the door 'I have no intention of giving you any money or my bank details. Is there anything else you'd like to discuss'

See what they do.

I used to collect money for charity as a volunteer. I wasn't perky or cocky. I bet he was a chuggar. Anything sounding like patter? Chugger.

angelicstar · 08/06/2012 19:39

mrsterrypratchett - I used to collect for a charity too and we were told we were not allowed to approach people or even rattle our tins and had to wait for people to come for us.
He definitely had the air of a chugger about him!

Eau du chugger, if you will.

TidyDancer · 08/06/2012 19:40

Oh you shouldn't have been so rude, but you know that I think.

I don't like chuggers (and he probably was one), but you really don't need to be that mean. :(

StepOutOfSpring · 08/06/2012 19:43

If he had a "patter" he was probably a chugger.

JoannaFight · 08/06/2012 19:45

I suggest a door sticker advising that you're not interested in cold calling etc.

I've got one and there's def been less. The ones that do knock are directed to the sticker. I think anyone who persists beyond that deserves to have the door shut on them.

Bluebell99 · 08/06/2012 19:49

I don't think any of us can answer this for you. Perhaps you should have asked him before shutting the door in his face? I have one of those signs on my door saying we do not buy or sell at this door, doesn't always stop them though. I was put off when a local hospice for children knocked really late one night about 9 30 as it is a charity I like to support but I was put off they would use chuggers late in the evening .

MsKittyFane · 08/06/2012 19:50

The 'cocky patter' is the give away. :o

bumbleymummy · 08/06/2012 19:54

I think you were rude to just close the door on him.

JoannaFight · 08/06/2012 20:02

In answer to your original question no yanbu. Between the phone and the door ours always seems to have someone there wanting money. Usually at the most inconvenent momentHmm.

It's intrusive and when you are busy it's a total pita. They take the chance that they'll catch someone at a wrong moment when they cold call. And cocky patter just makes it 10x more irritating.

comedycentral · 08/06/2012 20:25

I think you were a little rude. Poor guy, the weather has been awful today. Can just imagine him walking around in the rain and getting doors repeatedly slammed in his face.

angelicstar · 08/06/2012 20:43

I might give a small donation to the charity (they have a sbop in town). Hopefully will get my karma back in balance!
