to think that parents who allow their DCs to watch them play (binge) drinking games are idiots?

Just been having a nose at FB to relieve my marking boredom (I know, serves me right). I saw a series of photos taken at a jubilee party in which adults, watched by children, appeared to be taking it in turns to sit on a particular chair and down various drinks, including alcopops which in itself seems like a fucking stupid message to send.

AIBU to think that it's no wonder our binge-drinking culture is blossoming, when kids are watching their parents drink so irresponsibly?

Well I'd like to think it's very unusual fuckwittery, so hopefully nothing to do with the growing binge drinking culture.

I didn't know adults drank alcopops.

Sounds silly to me but maybe the photos looked like something it wasn't.

Maybe

It's only been called binge drinking recently, in the 70's it was just adults having a laugh at a party, which as a child I used to think was great.

So downing a whole alcoholic drink, which is intended to be sipped, in one go, isn't binge drinking? Hmm

I'm assuming the 'particular chair' was the 'dentist chair', where they literally have a mix of spirits poured down their necks.

If that's the case, they're definite fuckwits to do this in front of kids.

If not, then don't know what sort of 'particular chair' it was.

Plenty of binge drinking around in the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's if dh's family anecdotes are anything to go by. I wouldn't do it, but I always thought that was because I belong to a later, more straigh-laced generation.

TartyMcFarty · 05/06/2012 12:21

By 'particular' I just meant a chair that had been placed centre stage for the purpose. Oh, until the group drinking race pic, in which they're all sat in a row, immediately in front of kids aged about 5-10.

So perhaps because it's gone on for donkey's years it's OK. Or perhaps that's part of the ongoing problem.

Nothing wrong with children seeing parents drinking in a sensible way, but to be playing drinking games with children around is madness.

Sposh · 05/06/2012 12:28

Binge drinking by definition is drinking more than three units in one session so I would imagine that's most people who have a large glass of wine with dinner.

I agree that it isn't good, though I'm not sure it's any worse than watching a parent binge drink without the games/party. My mum did most of hers on her own while watching TV. I think making it normal may have more repercussion.
