to give up on free kindle books

I have just given up on my third unreadable free kindle book. This one has the most ridiculous errors - not spelling mistakes as such, but all kinds of incorrect homophones, eg. 'bad manors', 'thread bear' and 'head over heals'. I despair. Is it just that every novel ever written is now accessible and free on the kindle, even those that have never been proof read?

The first free book I got for the kindle was absolutely brilliant, so I'm reluctant to give up on them completely, and I hate spending money on books (especially ones that aren't even real), but I cannot bear/bare/bair Wink this irritation. How do you choose books for your kindle? In the (real life) library I usually go in with too many kids and grab loads of the 'popular reads', take them home then pick a few from the blurbs. This is much harder on the kindle. How to separate the wheat from the chaff?

Turtle Boy scared the shit out of me - that was free!

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 05/06/2012 16:02

I couldn't finish Turtle Boy, I was too scared Blush
I like LM Pruitt, and JR Rain - their books pop on and off the free list, but even when they aren't free they're really cheap - watch out for omnibuses (omnibii? Grin ) of Rain's Samantha Moon series, I got books 1-4 altogether cheaper than book 5 alone (even though they were all only coppers)
The Jude Magdalen series is good - my Kindle is packed to go away tomorrow, but when I get back I'll look them all up, there are LOADS of shaprshifter and paranormal and erotica free and dead cheap. If you find one book by say LM Pruitt, they recommend a load of others in the middle of the page - that's how I've found a lot of mine. There's a series called Wool, I bought 1-4 (or possibly 1-5) in one - they are quite short little episodes that make up one book and it is really good! I had one with the word Ammonite in the title, it was YA but very good, and one I read recently called Extinction Event iirc, about a girl called Emily, and I can't wait for the forthcoming sequel, it was brilliant. There are two about "Scary Mary" again, YA but good, and the Ivy Malone series is amusing if you like those Sue Grafton ones.
For anyone who likes Sherrilyn Kenyon type stuff, I highly recommend Shelly Laurenston, although hers don't tend to be free. I happily pay for hers though, and can read them again - they are paranormal romance and are funny, sexy and exciting with really "alive" characters.

i've had some great free books but i tend to ignore errors

I've had some amazing free books on Kindle. It is a fantastic way to try out new authors. Like someone upthread, I check out the free list at least once a day as I have noticed that free books often end up on the paid for list. Yes, there may be errors, but so what? It didn't cost me anything and if it is too bad, well, I can always delete it from my Kindle and it hasn't cost me anything apart from some time.

I love my Kindle.

thegreylady · 06/06/2012 13:28

I check out the free books most days-they are free after all and worth trying you can always delete them.

susiedaisy · 06/06/2012 13:29

Ime most free books are a load of rubbish that's why they are free, but like I say that's just my experience, but I love my kindleGrin

SoupDragon · 06/06/2012 13:30

I once complained about the errors in the free sample of a Apple iBook and they sent me 5 free "song" credits for my iTunes account.

Is there some way of complaining about Kindle books?

NotGeoffVader · 06/06/2012 13:47

One of my friends' friends had a book free on kindle recently. I've met the author and she's very particular about grammar, spelling etc.

I read the free online but I don't have a kindle so I can't download it. I think it's now on there for a few quid, but what I read was really good...
though that depends on what you like to read.

PomBear, omnibus is already a plural (genitive plural of omnes), meaning "of all." When studying Russian, I learned a neat trick for dealing with this sort of thing: use a "genre word" or phrase to avoid having to decline something (or, in English, to avoid feeling like a poncetastic prat for, for example, using "whom" correctly), thus: "in the novel 'War and Peace'", rather than "In 'War and Peace'" (which sounds silly and clumsy in Russian).

Therefore, your plural of "omnibus" would be expressed as "omnibus editions"!
