I see threads here all the time where the op has difficulties getting their opinions across and having people take them seriously. Standing up for yourself is a life skill that many people need surely? How do people learn to do it? Can it be learned or is it your personality?

Good question OP.

I am incredibly mild mannered, but since having my dd3 8 months ago who was born severely disabled, I have had to learn to stand up for her and that means being assertive and sometimes, not being as polite as I would like. But if I didn't stand up for her and myself as much as I have, I have no doubt that she wouldn't still be here now.

cupoftea my ds also has has some challenges and I've had to put aside my personal anxieties and just do what's best him, no matter how difficult. I agree with everyone, life seems to teach you to stand up for yourself. It's a shame that you have to go through these things in order to become stronger. I would nice to learn under less trying circumstances.

:) @ everlong. It's ok, you can have dave if I can have Tom Hardy or Ryan gosling :)

I think everyone is born with it. Life experience either affirms it or crushes it - often within the first few years of life.

But you can get it back - I did. Smile

in real life? assertiveness is important, i wish i could learn it. i've had a couple of small successes but nothing to boast about.
on the internet? i stick to being honest and clear, and not caring if people don't like it. there are so many fakers, i don't want to add to that, i just go about being me and let them take it or leave it.
dave grohl. yes.
