I watched a thing on US breakfast tv about a 19 year old mum who put her 1 month old baby on the roof of her car and then accidently drove off. He was unhurt but they went on to say that luckily she was arrested and charged. It turned out she was "high on cannabis". She was utterly demonised and the bias was on the fact that she would have the book thrown at her. Well, yes, obviously, this isn't great but instead of reacting with glee, I wondered if she had PND, social problems and asked if maybe she should be supported rather than attacked. Maybe she is just a terrible person but, in my experience, people who make such terrible mistakes need help. Not just the child being removed and adopted out. This is your fault, before I would have watched with indifference. AIBU to want to know the full picture or should she be punished?

How awful, she must feel terrible. So glad the baby is unhurt.Of course we should know the full story. Noone should be in charge of a baby or driving about the place "high on cannabis".
Though ime, sleep deprivation is far worse than any drug I've taken (I haven't done a lot of research admittedly :o ) and she probably could do with some help. I've yet to meet a new mother who couldn't do with a bit of help actually :)

I heard about this one too, how sad. So glad the baby is un hurt. I hope she gets the help she needs.

I don't understand your thread title OP.

theodorakis · 05/06/2012 05:05

Well I used to be able to pass through life without having to think too much, but these days I often have to think about the other side of things because I have spent too much time on MN with people with completely opposing views to me who I would never normally meet in real life.

No one should be high on cannabis when in sole charge of a baby. The End. Smile

My friend did this with his newborn in a car seat.
He strapped his toddler into the car and drove off, forgetting that the reason he was so sleep-deprived was still on the roof. The only thing that stopped him waqs the sight of his elderly neighbour, an elegant and calm gentleman, sprinting down the road after him waving and screaming 'For God's sake man, STOP!'
The baby had rolled off and onto the road still in the seat, furious but unhurt.
No oe should be doing drugs around a child they are responsible for, but should people be driving whilst incoherent and disorientated through lack of sleep?

I do like the way that being a member of MN has made me think about things from a different angle sometimes, even if I don't agree.
Uncomfortable but interesting!

Ophelia - my dad once told me that if bring ill or being tired makes you feel like you've had a double whisky then you shouldn't drive. He told me this after I had a blow out because I scraped the kerb when I had a virus and my perceptions were all out. Thank god these children were unharmed.

WhiteWidow · 05/06/2012 11:02

I have no sympathy for her, you do not, DO NOT take drugs when you have your child. Well you shouldn't really take them at all but that's debatable especially regarding cannabis but that's another story...

HandMadeTail · 05/06/2012 11:08

I know exactly what you mean, OP, and I am very pleased about it. MN has made me a much more thoughtful person.

No, she shouldn't have been high on any drug while in charge of a baby. But what do we know about her life? And who are we to judge?

I hope she gets appropriate help, but I doubt she will. Sad

oshuk · 06/06/2012 23:27

I see what you mean now! And yes to seeing the other side of things, good old MN.
