Sending DS to childminder when on holiday?

AlbertoFrog · 03/06/2012 22:27

Childminder gets paid if I take holidays while she works. Childminder doesn't get paid if she takes holidays. Fair enough.

DH and I are off tomorrow due to the Jubilee celebrations but childminder has decided not to take time off as she can't afford to lose money. Told her last week we'd be sending DS as normal so that DH and I could have some time together. She commented (sarcastically I felt) "it's alright for some" and has been moaning about everyone else being off and her having to work ever since.

I get the impression she hoped not to have any mindees due to other parents getting the day off but as it's a work day for her she'd still get paid and she isn't paricularly happy I've scuppered her plans.

I told her she should have taken the day off then Grin

So AIBU?

YANBU. If she wanted the day off, then she should have taken it off. She was rude to make the comment that she did. If this is your only gripe about her then I would just let it go, but if there are other concerns I would consider leaving her.

Noqontrol · 03/06/2012 22:30

No you're not unreasonable but if I was going to jubilee celebrations I would want to take Dc with me. But totally understand wanting a bit of time with Dh. You're paying for the childminder so of course you're not unreasonable.

rubyslippers · 03/06/2012 22:30

If she's open for business because she can't afford not to be it seems off that she's apparently not happy with you

Jodidi · 03/06/2012 22:31

YANBU - If she has said she's available for work then she's available for work. I am a teacher and get all the school holidays, but I still send dd2 for a couple of days a week while I'm on holiday as I'm paying for her to still go and it's easier to get jobs done if she isn't following me around like a little whirlwind (plus it's nice to send dd1 to a friend and have some alone time with dp)

rubyslippers · 03/06/2012 22:31

Oh - of she's open but no-one sends their children then she would be paid

Maybe she was hoping this scenario ^^ would happen

AgentZigzag · 03/06/2012 22:33

That just sounds like a general conversation moan rather than anything sarky, and if it was sarky there probably wasn't anything in it.

usualsuspect · 03/06/2012 22:34

Don't other people get bank holidays off with pay?

AlbertoFrog · 03/06/2012 22:35

Not going to any celebrations - that's just the reason we've got the day off.

Actually planning to do some work around the house and garden we can't get done while DS is there.

No other gripes really but not been using her long and just wondered if this was normal procedure for childminders. Not exactly rich and hate paying for nothing (not that that's the only reason for sending DS of course).

Usualsuspect, no self employed people usually don't get paid bank holidays.

AgentZigzag · 03/06/2012 22:38

What did you read her tone of voice as?

Could she have said it as banter, or was there a definite pissedoffness there?

She'd be a bit silly having a sly dig at someone she didn't know that well who's paying her to do a job.

McHappyPants2012 · 03/06/2012 22:38

Yanbu to send her, she is open for business. Hope you and dp have a nice day.

usualsuspect · 03/06/2012 22:39

Well it would have been nice for her to have the day off with pay, like the OP has

Champagneforlunch · 03/06/2012 22:41

Also I'm off all next week and both little Dds will be going to nursery as normal.

Champagneforlunch · 03/06/2012 22:43

Usualsuspect, the she goes and gets a job PAYE.
This is something she has to take into account when she sets her fees, she is running a business here.

usualsuspect · 03/06/2012 22:44

I think child minders get a hard time on MN tbh

usualsuspect · 03/06/2012 22:46

I wouldn't send mine to a child minder if I had the day off , but thats just me

HSMM · 03/06/2012 22:46

I am a CM. I don't want to work BH, so I make this clear in my policies and don't charge. If I did, I would expect to work or book the day off unpaid.

AlbertoFrog · 03/06/2012 22:47

I could just be being over sensitive due to feeling guilty at having a day without DS I suppose.

Bet we turn up tomorrow and she's got a full house.

Thanks for the replies.

YANBU

It`s her choice to work the bank holiday, if she wanted them off paid she should have put it in her contract. My CM charges half for bank hols but is closed - fair enough, I knew that when I signed up.

I send ds to the CM when I've off sometimes so I can get stuff done.

Rubirosa · 03/06/2012 22:53

My DP is self-employed and will be working tomorrow. I am employed and have the day off paid. That's just the way things work.

LadyWidmerpool · 03/06/2012 22:54

Don't feel guilty, have a nice day!

AlbertoFrog · 03/06/2012 23:01

Thanks all.

No doubt it will rain heavily while we're trying to get the garden into shape and I'll probably argue with DH at some point but kind of looking forward to having some adult time.

Just curious: does your CM normally work on BHs, OP? Does she charge her usual fee? I am also a CM but like HSMM I do not work on BHs and so I do not charge my families.

AlbertoFrog · 03/06/2012 23:13

I've only been using her for 6 months (was lucky enough to be able to take a full year off before returning to work part time) so I'm not quite sure what her holiday pattern is yet.

She took 2 days at Christmas and again at New Year and a week at Easter all of which were unpaid. I took a week off in March and paid for missed days which is fine.

Dare say it'll work itself out in the end. DS likes her which is the main thing.

Maybe she just likes a good moan Grin

as long as you are happy to pay double time go for it.
