To let the kids camp in the garden in the rain?

They are completely mad. It's pissing it down and they've set their tents up complete with their duvets etc. How long do you reckon they'll last? I'm goin to be trying to dy soggy bedding later, aren't I. They're 13 and 12, and have mates over to stay. I hope the other parents don't mind a bit of mud.

YANBU. Sounds ace!!

Sparklingbunting · 03/06/2012 14:01

Sounds fab. I would let them get on with it. Have they got any sleeping bags instead of duvets though?

aldiwhore · 03/06/2012 14:01

Echoing Iggly more exciting if there's real weather!!

Get your washing machine on stand by and keep the immersion on for baths aplenty.

FallenCaryatid · 03/06/2012 14:02

Sounds wonderful. My DS is a scout, being soggy and muddy is part of the experience and the fun.
Well done you for not banning it altogether.

comedycentral · 03/06/2012 14:03

I did it when I was a kid. Love the sound of rain on the outside of the tent. Leave them to it, memories are made from this.

Treblesallround · 03/06/2012 14:04

They've got sleeping bags but want the duvets as they're 'glamping' Hmm. They've strung up fairy lights etc. I guess they can have sleeping bags on the beds though if they give up. I might let them light a fire later if they can get it going (will only be little and will supervise obv)

Yanbu

And if there in a tent then they won't get wet will they? Confused

Sparklingbunting · 03/06/2012 14:06

I think it's all the going in and out of the tent that makes for all the mud and mess.

Have you got to post some food through the flap? Grin

Treblesallround · 03/06/2012 14:10

Think I'll cook a big roast and invite rest of family as well then let them toast stuff on the fire. They've got a stash of sweets so I think it's haribo for tea. Grin

Envy Treble. That sounds great.

enimmead · 03/06/2012 14:18

My son loved camping in the rain. His tactic was to stay in the tent reading books and then hide in the car watching as we packed up.

It's character building.

shuffleballchange · 03/06/2012 15:09

If mine were old enough, they would be out there in the rain in a tent right now, can't beat it!

Fleurdebleurgh · 03/06/2012 15:49

Are the fairy lights inside the tent?

Thats probably not a good idea.

Sparklingbunting · 03/06/2012 15:51

They may be battery ones.

Treblesallround · 03/06/2012 15:51

Battery powered lights strung in the tent, is there something I've missed? I'll get them to take them down if not safe

AndWhenYouGetToThePalace · 03/06/2012 15:57

So long as the lights don't get warm. And make sure they turn them off before they sleep (but I'm a worrier anyway - sure they'll be fine really!)

Sarcalogos · 03/06/2012 15:57

Just check they aren't getting hot, tents are pretty flammable things.

Treblesallround · 03/06/2012 16:04

They've (the lights) been on loads of camping trips and been fine but I think I'll get them to make sure they're not touching the tents just to be on the safe side. I don't think the batteries will last long enough for them to get that hot (and I'm too tight fisted to buy new ones).

They've got good torches so will be fine when they decide it's too cold and creep into the house and their warm beds

Is it too late to get them one of those disposable barbecues and something to cook on it? outside the tent of course, taking turns to hold the brolly Grin or let them into the house long enough to heat a big pan containing the first six tins out of the cupboard mixed together, then take the nice hot pan into the garden and huddle round it dipping in with toast and/or spoons Grin

Bellared · 03/06/2012 17:30

Can we all come? We used to camp out in each others back gardens all the time at that age and in all weathers. Like CC said memories will be made.

Then we'd sneak out when we heard the milkman and get fresh OJ off his float.

Or the boys would nick it from someone's doorstep.

Safmellow · 03/06/2012 17:31

No definitely let them it sounds great - just remember to put newspaper on the floor inside the back door, so that when they come trudging in at midnight to get warm they don't get mud everywhere :)

Treblesallround · 04/06/2012 10:07

They came in for supper, enticed by smell of roast chicken, got warm as the heating was on and abandoned the tents for the comfort of their beds. Children today huh. No grit!
