To trust that General Anaesthesia is safe?

A friend of mine is consumed by the idea that a GA is not as safe as we are told.

He says his mum is a nurse and has seen more than a few people die of a GA when they were otherwise healthy with low risk factors. He is adament that any procedure he has will be done with a local anaesthetic.

Personally, I'm glad he didn't say any of this before I had my operation a few weeks ago. Both times I had a GA I found it a pleasant experience in terms of immediately before and after.

And GAs are far more refined and modified than many years ago aren't they? What do you all think?

yanbu.

I've had 4. Yes, I was scared each time but I am healthy and they were all planned procedures. Each time the theatre staff explained what they were doing and what each machine was for. TBH it's like a bloody good sleep.

Gassers and Slashers always makes me chuckle.

Those who have seen the mistakes will likely be more cautious about it. My DH is very cautious about GA as his grandfather suffered badly after an anaesthetic mistake which left him with brain damage and fast progressing dementia; while my experience with GA have been fine and am more worried about spinal anaesthetics as I have multiple health issues which raise the risk factor of it. Everything has a risk and we all have to weigh up our different options.
