Mn jury needed! Re second hand car seats

Are second hand car seats ok to use?
I am expecting my first child in oct, and we don't have alot of money.
My DH found a infant car seat in the loft, and thinks this ok to use. I'm not so sure.

No - again as you don't know the history but I have a second hand one given by a friend which I know is ok.
