Isn't that appalling? Shock I can't believe they are insinuating that Germany has an 'empire' or 'kingdon'.

karmabeliever, don't patronise me you rude little person.

i have nowhere said that i feel resentment of anything or anyone. i responded to your post about victors writing history. a general point that i referred to britain as we are in britain.

as i said, 'part of me feels...' i also said that i understand that reality/practicality is not the same as feelings. can you not read? can you not assimilate and understand simple ideas that are put in front of you?

not being responsible for the past is a good cop out for those of you who are living on the accrued benefits of past actions.

countries' actions these days are formed by their past experiences. france and britain went into libya, not for the love of the people there, but to secure oil contracts when everything settles down. this 'right to act' comes from both countries past places/positions in the world. germany treads more carefully. until recently i belive it's constitution forbade military actions outside it's borders. the germans are flexing their muscles now because they can and because they do not want a replay of the 1920s/30s and they do not want other countries to drag them into an economic mess.

has anyone just seen channel 4 news? joscka fischer, former finance minister in germany, claims that germany must avoid bringing disaster to europe for the third time. so it seems that there is a view in germany that they should underwrite gr

sorry, the internet failed for a while,

the greek and italian bailout.

Creighton, when I talked about resentment, I used 'you/your' generically, rather than meaning you personally.

And it's not about copping out, it's about not feeling guilt or responsibility for events that a current population had no hand in and which occurred long before they were born.

I think Britain's actions in Libya were less to do with history and maybe more to do with pressure from the USA, combined with desire for the oil.

creighton · 05/06/2012 20:28

well that's okay then. did you not notice that i patronised you when accusing you of being patronising?

i think britain and france acted due to their 'world policeman/we know africa' attitude in their own right as well as due to any influence from america

The irony of it did not escape me, but I thought it would be equally rude on my part to criticise you for it Grin
