Because I'm pissed that the council (not UK) have put the school bus stop outside my house and put double yellows on either side to make it 'safer'.

Which makes be sound unreasonable, right?

Except they've conveniently forgotten that I own that bit of 'road', not them. Our boundary wall was ancient and I had to apply for planning permission to move it back 1.5m to create parking for us out front. Our property is older than the others in the street and their actual property boundary is in line with the now moved wall. So the council own the rest of the street upto the walls except with ours.

There was a clear distinction between their tarmac and our gravel until they retarmaced it last year, and did our bit as well. I didn't make an issue because I thought it was a genuine mistake and looked better that way. But now the cheeky buggers have effectively banned me from parking on my own 'drive'.

The neighbours think I'm being unreasonable to go apeshit complain 'because all the children use it and it's safer because their protected from traffic'. Protected from traffic? I live in the arse end of nowhere, the school bus coming twice a day is as busy as the traffic gets.

And breathe.

Oh fuck, sorry about the caps. Blush

EdgarAllenPimms · 31/05/2012 17:54

you may be able to look up all the necessary online and email it to them free and for nothing. they should have a record of the PP - the proposed boundary - and the current ownership.

try the council website planning portal.

Peppin · 31/05/2012 17:54

YANBU, the council either need to lease that bit of land from you or buy it from you at a realistic market rate. Have you considered that it may affect the value of your property when you come to sell it when buyers do their searches and discover that this bit of what should be "their" land is being used by the council? Also after a certain number of years (I can't remember for sure how many), in theory the council could claim adverse possession of that land unless you object.

Absolutely YANBU.

FlippinCheekOfIt · 31/05/2012 17:56

Suppose, not support. The fumes from the paint are making my brain go funny.

Most Councils are fuckwits. A lady in our village applied for Disabled Parking outside her house. The Council put the bay 70yds down the road, right outside the shop and Church (where the hearse pulls up and there is only room for 5 cars anyway)!

They moved it 2 weeks later.

Complain loudly and longly!!!

Jux · 31/05/2012 19:11

Cheeky buggers. Make sure you ask ask for a goodly sum!

threeleftfeet · 31/05/2012 19:14

Love your gnomes idea :)

Bletchley · 31/05/2012 19:21

Gnomes AND spikes! Awesome!

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 31/05/2012 19:24

Peppin has a good point. You should get it sorted ASAP.

Blu · 31/05/2012 19:31

YAabsolutelyNBU.

I would get them to re-instate everything how it should be - spikes, no tarmac, the lot.

And do it quickly - these things are a bugger once you come to sell.

Don't they have to consult before doing thinsg like bus stops and double yellows?

Blu · 31/05/2012 19:32

You need a regiment of gnomes with spikes.
Viscious gnomes.
Gnome Wars.

OddBoots · 31/05/2012 19:49

And you can ask your neighbours if they would be willing to give up a bit of their land for free for a bus stop? I bet none would, especially if they'd had to pay to for wall moving to get access to it in the first place.

AnneofGreenFables · 31/05/2012 20:10

Can I suggest a MN sit-in? We'll take possession of the land holding gnomes with spikes and with serious cat's bum mouths!!

YA so NBU. I'd be spitting

Hopandaskip · 31/05/2012 20:38

I think I'd be tempted to send them an official bill for the cost to remove the markings they made on your land.

Buntingbunny · 31/05/2012 20:39

YANBU

They repainted the junction in the village, the markings had vanished because the road surface was shot.

Since they had, basicly, painted loose gravel the markings wore away again.

So they resurface the road. Hooray!

However they then come back and repaint the road markings with the give way line across the "major" road.

So they come with black stuff and we go back to no road markings (we still have the sign)

Eventually they get right, sigh....We pay council tax to these idiots!

Jux · 31/05/2012 20:41

Misread for a moment there, Grin I thought you said viscous gnomes, Blu!

Mind you, viscous gnomes would be harder to drag into the police van when the cops come to break everything up.

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 31/05/2012 20:46

I hate gnomes (they are evil) but please can we have a photo of the glued down ones outside the house?

For extra repelling effect can I suggest these gnomes.

TheCunnyFunt · 31/05/2012 20:49

In our town the county council gets called the county cowboys. They are ridiculously useless.

Yanbu, play merry hell up until they do something about it!

WhiteWidow · 31/05/2012 21:35

God I'd be fuming! You're not being unreasonable at all. Wonder how the other people would feel if it was their drives! PLEASE tell me you'll fight this

FlippinCheekOfIt · 04/06/2012 22:16

Well the official answer from the council is "What? We didn't do it". Okay. So what about all the yellow lines forbidding me from parking outside my own house on my own land? "Ignore them, we don't have any traffic wardens anyway".

Confused
OP posts:
Rosa · 04/06/2012 22:23

Paint over the lines, sheet over bus stop with large sign saying bus stop moved 200m and stick temp bus stop sign on a gate post said 200m away... Problem sorted...

HecateTrivia · 04/06/2012 22:25

If I were you, I'd insist on getting it all in writing.

Because, frankly, if the local council told me it was morning, I'd put my pjs on and make myself a nice hot mug of cocoa.

OddBoots · 04/06/2012 22:25

Have you got that in writing?

xkcdfangirl · 04/06/2012 22:27

It was probably the bus company then.

Paint over the yellow lines yourself, and put up a "private parking, residents only" notice.

ellangirl · 04/06/2012 22:28

Make sure you take a note of every phone call and letter exchanged between the council and yourself, mostly to protect yourself if they do decide to be arsey about it in the future.
And try not to call them fuckwits to their faces although you may be justified in thinking so!
